Ireland need Superman, Ireland need Superman!!!!

I can understand the feelings of the Irish fans but surely you want the best players to play for your country? Whatever the reasons for him not playing are, they should be sorted out. Stevie is one of the best players in this country and was one of your best players when he played. There must be a way of dealing with the issues and re-introducing him back into international football.

Oh and for the level of internation football and the world cup, Steven Ireland should be playing on the biggest stage and that is the world cup.

Would Ireland be a great addition to the squad, yes without question.

But Ireland imo acted like a complete brat and shouldn't be allowed walk back into the squad just because he's changed his mind. He acted like a brat, for whatever reasons, you don't just walk away freely and not look back with no excuse, no apology, nothing. You don't act the way he did, and after an age, after he turned his back on his country, his teammates, and let them do all the hard work, he shouldn't be able to change his mind like that. If Ireland qualify for the world cup, (please God) there will be a few people who'll raise an eyebrow or so.

He's not your typical Irish player though, he doesn't have that attitude. Every player on the pitch tonight showed great character and heart and commitment, they faught hard and give it their all. Can I say that I know that Ireland will give 100% for the team..no.

Irish players, the majority of them, are sound, great characters. Ireland doesn't seem to fit into that type of people that they are. He's a different attitude, he's the flashy personalised cars, a limelight seeker, most Irish players aren't, all of them aren't.

One thing that was so rare about the Irish team is that all the players wanted to play for their country, which can't be said about a lot of modern day players who couldn't be bothered playing for their country, these players love playing for Ireland and see it as an honour, they give everything. Ireland just gives the impression that he thinks he's better then us, that it's almost an embarasment to play in the team. I mean last time I checked, we're not that bad. We don't go to World Cups (if we qualify) hoping to win them, or expecting to, we take it step by and step, and give it our all and ya, we're guilty of having that give it a lash attitude. But I mean Roy Keane was 10 times the player Ireland is, was United's captain, he didn't think he was better then this team. He got himself sent home trying to get improvements for this team at the WC, but he came back because it was an honour to play for the country.

If Ireland was to come back, would people be annoyed..maybe for a microsecond, because he's that good, but if he was going to come back, changed his mind and gave a half assed go on the pitch, then he shouldn't bother at all.

Once he gives 110% no one will care, but that's all we expect here, we're not deluded like the English..(no offense) we don't think that we'll win the WC or whatever, we take it game by game, wanting everyone to give 110% and if we go on, great, if we don't, there's nothing more we could really have asked for them. The last time Ireland were in any sort of campaign was the WC in 2002 and it was the highlight of a lot of these lads careers, how Ireland doesn't want to be a part of that is beyond me.
But everytime the RTE (Irish) panel talk about the WC and can Ireland qualify, it always comes down to someone saying that for the sake of Given, Dunne..etc, great players who haven't a lot of time left, should get another chance to show how good they are on the world stage and would hope and love if we do.

That and we had the best time there, mighty craic.

Ireland seems to have the attitude of a typical Premiership superstar.

Like here's an account from one of Given's brother,

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.castlebar.ie/board/0302/48526.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.castlebar.ie/board/0302/48526.htm</a>

5th paragraph down describes how most of the players and friends of the players and families and a bucket load of Irish fans, ended up in this Irish pub in Korea (because they are everywhere) after the Spanish game that knocked us out, and it tells basically of all the craic they had, and there's a line there where he said can you imagine the English players doing the same..Ireland fits into that group. He's more one of them, those superstar players, then one of the Irish lads.

Look do I want Ireland to come back, yes. More then anything, but we will not beg..well we might be desperate enough to do so, but in principle anyway, we wont beg.

Fuck off fella!

What do you mean you're not deluded like the English? England HAVE got a chance of winning the world cup next year with the quality of our players whom have not had a manager to take them places in the last fuck knows how many years but now we have and the weather (its gonna be like 10-15degrees over in SA next summer! compared to the usual massive heat and humidity you usually get in world cups) it will suit our game down to the ground!

Not deluded, ha.......I went to Uni with Irish lads and have met a fair few over the years! The lads i went to uni with (there were about 10-12 of them at my uni) all said they hate the English (and they did, all the Irish lads told me over and over again how they hated us all, hated our Govt, our national teams, our people etc! Like when you've just disrespected us by saying we're delusional[we're not the ones who still believe in God FFS!]!) but they all supported English football teams! WHAT THE FUCK! Ask them why and they said "oh everyone supports them over in Ireland!" or "because Roy Keane plays for United!" (so they dont actually support United they just supported the player - that's not supporting the fucking team, no where near the same!

Plus, i dont give a fuck what you think of Stevie Ireland! You dont know him so cant really cast judgement, you're just going off what you THINK or what you've HEARD or what you've READ IN THE MEDIA! I personally hope he just stays as a club player and fucks you lot off!

Sorry to those who think ive gone over the top here but being called delusional by some twat who's just come on here to tell me his negative opinion (not fact, how do you know Stevie isnt really hurting inside and is dying to play for the country again but there might be something that has gone on that we dont know [like what i have heard of the team all pinning him down and tying to pull his wig off last time he was with the squad - would i want to play with them players again, NO CHANCE!])of our player, of England players and of English people in general! DO ONE PAL!

I dont think it is the fans that think Engerland will win the World Cup more so the media. For weeks before the finals they build there team up so much that the fans beleive they can win it, and when they look good in the group stage of the World Cups it is OUR YEAR to win it Englands big chance. I will tell you now in the World Cup group it isn't the hardest of groups you got apart from Croatia the other teams are poor compared to other groups so you will go to SA next summer.
This is when the World Cup start you have better teams. England are nowhere near the Spanish who will be there or abouts to win it. The weather will help every team not just England. Fuck me no player likes to play in a match when it is 30 degrees or more so it would be the right conditions for everyone. Yes there is some great quaility in the team but I fear for the defence and the keeper. I think that is a area that teams can get at. The midfield I dont think Gerrard and Lampard can play in the same team together so thats a worry. You are not as good as other teams in holding onto the ball in the big games against the better teams.

Eh? I don't agree with IrishMacca's point, especially about Stevie's character, but you're having a lash there. He was talking about the media hype fest that happens at every tournament England are at. Just coz you went to college with a few dicks, don't paint us all that way, cheers.

Playing against International players will only make him a better play if he does decide to go back to Ireland

Trap told him he wouldn't be able to do that without having played a part in getting there

If Ireland improves on this season then he would be seen as one of the best midfielders in the country, can't see him being that stubborn but what do I know.

Why are you so angry?

There is no doubt that Stevie will improve if he is playing at the highest level and if the Irish get through I would love to see one of the best City players for years play in the World Cup finals.

I'd like to see him in a world cup but if he doesn't fancy it then fair enough, as long as he keeps doing the business for us

My God there are a few issues on here!

Firstly, I'm Irish and would absolutely love to see superman back playing for the national side but think he would get some serious abuse from ignorant Irish football fans who dont know any better. Playing in a World Cup can only improve a player and someone of his quality deserves to display his skills at the highest level.

There are quite a lot of generalizations on this thread (Irish hating English etc) which is total bollox. Please dont tar us all with the same brush. I travel to Manchester every second weekend to see my beloved Citizens and love every minute of it, its a great city and myself and my friends have never encountered and hassle. Have you ever walked up O'Connell street at 4am??

In 94 when Ireland qualified for USA most of the English supported us as they didnt qualify which is how it should be. Some Irish people live in the past and I wish to God they'd build a fucking bridge and get over it! For what its worth I genuinely do think the English have a good chance at the world cup this summer. Best you've played since Venables, best of luck and hopefully we'll be there too.

Would you relax.
In you're own sentence, you genuinely think ye'll win every year. Ye've a handful of really good players but not a good team. They've failed shockingly every single time, I mean ye didn't even qualify for the Euro's.
I mean, we go there with no delusions, if we get there that is, but ye think ye'll win it.
Ye're not the home of the beautiful game, ye're the hosts. That's the truth of it. Ye've some excellent players but they can't and don't play well together.
So it's the managers fault and the weathers that ye fail to get anywhere near winning a competition.
You think I've "disrespected" ye because I said ye were deluded? And then you go on and say that we're deluded because we "still believe in God," and you think what I've said is disrespectful?
What some idiots thought years ago has nothing to do with us or my post.

And for your information, I actually, unlike you, do know Ireland, I knew him as a lad.

He acted like a brat. Not why he left in the first place, he's a young lad, he made a mistake, but his attitude afterwards that is my problem.

Ireland had no problem pulling down his shorts after scoring a goal during a game in front of thousands of people and the tv cameras, but what, he got upset with the lads apparently making fun of his hair? It's bull, it's an excuse. He didn't want to play for Ireland, for whatever reason. But no one has ever had a problem with this team. They are sound bunch of lads.

His excuse was that a few of the lads were making fun of his hair, I mean, the Irish mentatlity is to take the absolute piss out of eachother. I mean, you should be worried if you're not getting made fun of.
No one has ever had a problem with this squad, even when Roy Keane was in it. Ireland's making excuses why he doesn't want to play. And now, now that Ireland look like they could well qualify suddenly he's interest again.

I disrespected no one.
Do I think ye are a bit dellusional to think ye'll win, yes.
That's the problem, ye get so caught up in it all, ye're convinced every tournament is yere's to win. That's why I think ye're deluded, I meant no offense. But I think you proved my point by your reaction.

Jesus, Mary an Joseph but there's people with issues on this thread!
Do the Irish hate the English? Do the English hate the Irish? Are all Irish players really the salt of the earth? Do the English fans/media think they're team is better than they actually are? Are some university students complete pricks? Do the Irish have ambiguous feelings towards the British? Does God exist and if so, are the Irish therefore more delusional than the English? (At least, danburger, we're embarassed about our inbreds - ye put ye'res in palaces). When, Immacualte Pasta, did Ireland ever go out in the group stages of a World Cup? Did the nasty, wasty bigger boys tease lickle Stevie because he had a gammy head of hair (Imagine my shock when I heard it! Banter and horseplay in a dressing room? What were the odds?).
Oh yeah, Stephen Ireland... would he be a better player if he went back playing for his country?
There I was, so busy philosophing to myself on the greater questions of the last 800 years of Anglo-Irish relations that I almost forgot that little nugget. (And I was so hoping that it'd all be solved by throwing abuse at each other for another four pages).
Of course, he f**king well would be a better player.

What a fucking load of bollocks.

Look do I want Ireland to come back, yes. More then anything, but we will not beg..well we might be desperate enough to do so, but in principle anyway, we wont beg.

Do you want to go to the World Cup and have another chance to go in a South African Irish pub and have the good old Irish "craic" after going out in the group stage? Then you better beg for Stephen Ireland.

A part of me wishes Ireland never steps out in the Irish green jersey again, fuck them. He's a blue now and as much as i would love to see him perform on the world cup stage it would mean he would give the same chance to fucking wankers like Stephen Hunt.

COME ON BULGARIA AND ITALY!!!!

Like I said, dont tar all the Irish with the same brush but Immaculate Pasta you're just the type to do it. Let me ask you if England played city who would you support??

Who do you love more? Your mum or your Dad? Your first born or your latest born?

I think we are palying quite well as a team at the moment actually, we werent fantastic on Saturday but sometimes it's harder to play your own game against very poor opposition than it is good quality opposition (look at the FA Cup year after year!) I dont think we WILL win the world cup, but i genuinly believe we'll have a chance! Im not deluded, far from it, were Everton fans deluded because they've believed all season they'd get to the FA Cup Final, what about Pompey fans when they won it last year, in cup competitions anyone can end up tournament winners! Look at the average Germany teams that have reached finals after finals and are no better if not worse than England (our B team easily beat them 2-1 on their own patch)! Thinking my country can win has nothing to do with delusions! If Steven Gerrard is bang in form he can drive England on to beat any team - thats no delusion because he's done it for Liverpool against excellent opposition in Europe and in the Prem, and international footy is not a million steps above Chumps Lg level! If we get almost any teams in the world in the knock out stages i believe we can beat them because we have got experience in the team now from 1, 2 some 3 world cups (look at United, Arsenal and Liverpool in Europe, they took a few years of getting to round1, the quarters, the semi's then finals, some they'v lost and some they've won some!)

England are better than YOU THINK we are! I dont really take you'r opinion on board to be honest, you say Englsih people are deluded, i know plenty of lads who dont think we have a chance next year in the world cup, if we qualify for it, but i just have optimism and not delusions! So your generalisation just going off what you think or what me, one person, has said is bollocks!

You talk as if us English think we're a step above you or something, i can tell by your tone that's what you think! but we dont, well i dont, i just put in a very poor generalisation with the religion thing, but thats as poor a generalisation as yours! and you've gone on like the Irish have some superior sense of humour to everyone else but of you came into any pub in Manchester you'd see that all people can have a sense of humour and take the piss out of each other, the Irish are no different to anyone else! From what ive seen from S.Ireland and the devotion he's shown at City it strikes me that he is a very grounded and respectful person and that what's gone on with the Ireland national team appears to be something more than nothing, if he's acted like a brat then maybe theres something big behind it and he acted as an inexperienced, young, scared, ill-advised(if advised at all) lad - everyone makes mistakes but what ive seen and heard from S.Ireland and everyone who's said something about him after meeting him (apart from 1 person, you) makes me think a lot higher of him than what you can persuade me to think!
