IRISH BLUES/RAGS

Why no Irish flags flying at Everton matches then? And why the strong Rangers/protestant connection?

On a serious note, most cities have a catholic team and a protestant team. Usually, the catholic team play in red and the protestant team in blue:

Catholic:

United
Liverpool
Celtic
Arsenal

Protestant:

City
Everton
Rangers

This could all be coincidence - I have no idea. Perhaps someone could enlighten me?

In any case, these ties are still pretty strong today even if the religious connection has been somewhat diluted.

eg when celtic play the scum, you will see hundreds of half scum, half celtic scarves. rangers and everton have close ties and lots of players have played for both clubs, eg Gazza. You couldn't imagine Gazza ever playing for Celtic, or Roy Keane for Rangers. I had the misfortune to attend the giggs testimonial scum vs celtic, and both sets of fans were chanting and had banners of 'keano', even though keane had not played for celtic. Odd.

eg when the catholic teams play, you see rafts of irish flags in the crowd. With everton, city and rangers you're more likely to see Union Jacks.
Disagree mate, I know quite a few Everton fans back home, they're probably the most popular team outside of the top 4 teams over there in the north at least, a lot of people have family in liverpool.

Theres no religion with City, I've not seen it, I know a few Rangers supporters follow us as their English team but look at me, I'm an Irish ex-catholic Celtic supporting City fan, although City come first always ofcourse! Theres a few more of us on here too, some are Scottish, some are Irish.

The big club that Rangers follow is Chelsea, especially when they were shite, but there are a good lot of rags and scouse supporters too. Most Celtic fans probably support Liverpool, they've more connection with them, but the big club almost all of them follow is Barca these days, the two groups of fans are on good terms when they go to Barcelona and Glasgow.

It does but a lot of us identify with liverpool a lot easier. Same with Glasgow, even the slang is similar to ours.

Agreed, it's mostly of historical interest only anyway and as religion has dwindled in England the lines have thankfully been blurred over the years, unlike in Glasgow or Belfast.
