Two industry spokesmen were quoted today as saying Brexit was unlikely to have been a factor.Apparently Spanish and Morroccon producers are just prioritising their contracts with EU customers because they're so much bigger and older, and UK supermarkets that had to change suppliers post-Brexit are getting the short straw. Walked past my local market today and the guy had stacks of tomatoes. Waitrose has boarded up the whole section.
The really worrying this is that Brexit doesn't really start to affect the import of fruit and veg until January 2024. That's when things are going to really spiral.
The new factor, apart from weather, apparently was the price of electricity causing both Dutch and UK producers to reduce greenhouse heating.
