Is Gaël Clichy that good?

He was fantastic last night, knew when to attack and when to stay back and provided width and linked well with Silva and Jovetic. A fantastic performance.

Gael Clichy is a wonderful professional. He might not be the best left back in the world but it's never for lack of effort. He is a good full back and one of the better ones in the premiership and he does seem to have upped his game a bit from last year which was great. Maybe Kolarov's improvement has had something to do with that or maybe Pellegrini has worked on him to up his game a bit.

Last night he was excellent both defensively ( was Lennon playing?) and going forward.

Good to see him have such an excellent game. Our fullbacks are so important and need rotation, so it's really important to have two very good to great fullbacks on each side. Hopefully, Richards can get back to his best too.

It's a shame but as fans, I think we tend to look at a player's weaknesses more than his strengths.
I've thought for a while that Gael is a good defender with great pace but offers very little going forward. On the other hand, Aleks is very keen to get forward and can produce some brilliant passes/crosses, but is too easily beaten as a defender and can be found wanting positionally. When Zabba plays, I always expect any goal conceded to come from the opposite flank.

In the way that this City team plays, a fullback needs to be able to be as effective going forward as he is in defence.

There's no doubt that Aleks has improved his defending this season maybe giving him the edge for left back, so how great it was to see Gael going forward with purpose and to great effect yesterday.

There have been lots of comments on this forum about players' improvements over last season and that MP should be congratulated for his impact. Whoever is responsible, it is great to see, and if Gael has been given the confidence to make a contribution going forward, it is likely to improve his defending too and maybe we don't need a neew left back after all

The cross to Dzeko was phenomenal. I always think our players tend to wait too long before crossing. Early crossing is much more lethal if done correctly. Dzeko did really well to chest it down but should have scored. I was so frustrated with his shooting last night.

But back to Clichy, I'm happy he got the start and proved he can still perform at an elite level.
