Free prescriptions in Scotland and no tuition fees. Wales are going the same way. Benefits galore to Falkland Islanders and £millions per day to subsidise Northen Ireland

It's alright these people wanting to stay part of the UK, why wouldn't they?

It's all good as far as they're concerned.

Okay, thats three times in three pages. Stop insinuating that the Welsh are free-loaders you boring, WUMing, IRA-respecting dribble of cock-snot.

You would think you are doing us a favour by being in NI when this problem was created by you hundreds of years ago.England cant afford not to have a military prescence on this island because we are so close,ye can put any different slant you want on it but that is the bottom line.
Irish neutrality counts for very little when it comes down to the fear of perceived attack and its for this very reason so much is pumped into both Irish economies by England.
As for the rest the way I see it you reap whay you sow,the way nations have been treated in the past by the English leaves a lot to be desired and it pays for you to have foreign based landing zones. The past is the past but with your history it pays to be safe and that safety costs money in the modern age.[/quote="Shadz69"]

why would we fear an attack from the irish? We have not been successfully invaded since 1066. Countless great armies have failed. You think that Britain keeps soldiers in Ireland to keep the irish out of here? LOL

As a base to launch an attack a country a few miles away wouldnt be the best place to do it from?We dont have a history of invading foreign lands unlike yourselves and are a peaceful nation. Our army would be non existant if it wasnt for the UN whereas you need to keep a large army to protect you from your past.
When in the future times are more peaceful NI will be handed back and we will live in peace but for the time being you feel safer with this presence,
Imagine we had close economic and military ties with any of your enemies and there were military installations along our east coast you wouldnt be worried?

Well you didn't give much else but if you can't coherently put across a point just put that's horseshit that is much better.

hard to argue with someone who actually believes in the year 2011 the english are concerned that if northern ireland become part of a united ireland they would be used as a stepping stone by a foreign power to attack us, the liverpool landings eh?, i think the government would be delighted if NI became part of a united ireland unfortunately the majority of the people who live their dont seem so keen.

as for the general population of england i wouldnt imagine they care either way. if the world has any chance at some point a line has to be drawn.

most countries have a history of shitting on others or their own, i dont get annoyed by the germans let it go

I don't know what I have to let go I have no problem with the English as I said the past is the past but it is naive to think our proximity to you has no bearing what so ever on relations between us.

I think you are right insofar as the imperative to retain a strategic base to the west of the UK was the reason for partition in 1921, rather than the wishes of the Unionist population of the six counties.

I would say, however, that it appears to me, from your posts in this thread, that your statement that 'the past is the past' is a bit of an empty one, as it seems to me that you are still harbouring issues about British history which strongly influence your views today.

A unified Ireland fo the first time in history is still a long way off, the people of the North will not tolerate it and the economy of the south would totally crash if it had to try and cope with 1 million citizens that would not contribute to society but try and undermine it at every turn.
Without the irish fighting for the empire in the napoleonic campaign, the result would have been very different, without the commonwealth on our side during the two world wars the result would have been different.
At one stage over 50% of the army were either Irish or of Irish extraction, and I think the Erne was a great base during the second world war for the flying boats to protect the merchant fleet as was the port of Derry - Londonderry - Doire

There is more chance of the RoI rejoining the commonwealth than of Northern Ireland joining the 26.
