Argentina in the first game and messi were woeful, Little Julie arrives creates space Messi amd the Argies have a better tournament.

no Alvarez no space created for messi who would have finished his career with no World Cup .

Maradona still the greatest

were they shite first game?
di messi strugle to find space in said game?
did partnering him with alvarez benefit him and argentina in the whole?

the answer is yes

messi had a great tournament, but the players and formation from their second game onwards aided that, especially julie and mcallister.

You could literally apply this view point to any good performance by any player in any match in the history of football.

Messi also won the Copa America and Finalissima without Alvarez in the team, as well as made another WC final and others.

(Along with the rest of his unbeatable career of course)

yes you can but when you are talking about the greatest palyers, one that during this world cup was talked about as carrying the team forward each game solely, messi was a palyer that had done that at barca and in the copa america, but not in the last world cup.

the narrative he won it for argentina is a false one, the manager seeing the flaws of the first game and changing tactics/players along with messi did.

he will always be one of the greatest but for me not as good as maradona was.

Still going for Maradona and Pele as better
Some of the things Pele did in the 1970 World Cup I have not seen anybody come close until 1986 when unbelievably Maradona surpassed that.
Messi as brilliant as he was did not come close to those two in 2022.

This goal came up on my YouTube. I’ve seen it many times before but I dare say it’s the most technically able goal I’ve ever seen.

I genuinely believe that no other player could have scored that goal except (maybe) Maradona and certainly no one else.

For perspective Barca couldn’t get through a 9-10 man defence and we’re struggling to create chances. Messi then did this…

Watch Fabregas’ reaction.

Great goal but to say only one and maybe two players could score it is a leap.

Our own Phil is more than capable of doing that.

Pele is always a hard one to debate because he didn't play in Europe. Maradona did, and his record isn't a patch on Messi because for all of his brilliance he wasn't consistently winning games on his own in the way Messi did. That's not to say he wasn't a brilliant player. Messi-Maradona-Pele would be my order. All three just behind Sir John Stones.

But Maradona did win games on his own.
Napoli were not a patch on any of the teams Messi played with.
