No idea how you judge players from different times though? How can anyone be called the best when they played under differernt rules? Just enjoy the greats.

Anyways, back in the day, Fat Tommy from my Sunday league team would get well sloshed on a Saturday, but still drag all 20 stone of his hangover self on to a pitch and nobody got past him. He was magic, scared the crap out of people, but bloomin magic. Brings a tear to my eye does that memory.

Messi was better than all of them. George Best? Should be fucking banned for that.

Ronaldo isn't on the same planet. Only player close is Maradona but Messi did it for much longer and wasn't a cheating cokehead.
 
For me the greatest is Maradona. He did win the World Cup virtually on his own in 1986. His skill, acceleration, shooting and dribbling were better than Messi in my opinion, but he had a flawed character and Messi is the consummate professional. If I had to pick one in their prime for a game it would be Maradona.

It was a different game in Dixie's day. He had a fractured skull from a motorcycle accident in 1926 and carried on scoring headers. He also lost a testicle after a tackle while playing for Tranmere. I can't imagine any of today's lot doing that.

What exactly do you mean by "prime"? You mean what he can do in one year? Or one season? Or one tournament? Or one month? or one match?

Pick any of them and then we'll compare with Messi.

But yeah, as other people said, "cannot compare between different era", then fair enough, and stop comparing.

Prime- the best a person has ever been in their lifetime. And I said for “ a match”. And the title of the thread suggests comparison with other players over “history”

think that's the case with anything nowadays, people get defensive that someone from the past was much better. whether its boxing, snooker, tennis etc.
 
Without sounding like Pep Messi is in a world of his own.

There is no shame in being the second best player behind him.

There is not just one GOAT, yet to demerit un such manner his talent and carreer is beyond silly...BTW Maradona it's my favorite player ever.
This doesn't equate to undisputable be the best ever, nor means that someone can't find Pele, Maradona, Cryuff, Di Stefano, etc a very sellected bunch their numbwr one.

At the end of the day if someone has the urge to demerit Platini to like more Zidane, to demerit Messi to like more Maradona, to demerit Di Stefano to like.more Cruyff etc. kind of nulify that prefference

Demerit????

I said it is uncomparable and gave reasons why, different eras, attitide to fitness, leagues etc.

messis is a generational talent but no one can say world best ever because football generation had different condotions.

maradona is my personal choice of greatest, bit I never said messi. wasn't a great player.


now zidane, you mention, never rated him ;-)
