Of course Given should be guaranteed his place.
However, the opening post does, inadvertedly, touch on another interesting point.
Who remembers last December when, desperate for scapegoats, Hughes decided that Joe Hart would be one of the people he blamed for his inability to get results and successfully mould a team.
All of a sudden we were constantly being told by Hughes and certain journalists, that City were shit at defending because they had a novice keeper in net. Never mind that he had played really well for 18 months and is a brilliant keeper.
No, no, no. The Great Mark Hughes, this wonderful manager, was being made to look inept because he was being forced to play Joe Hart and not a vastly experienced keeper.
(Well, that wasn't the only reason given for Hughes looking shit, he made sure that plenty of other people - players, staff, ex staff - got fingered for the blame in the snide stories too)
Lo and behold, one of the best keepers in world football for the past 10 years comes in, performs brilliantly and we still look shit at defending for the next 12 months.
Meanwhile, Joe Hart, probably justifiably, feels really let down and like he has been shit on.
