Is Shay's Place a Given?

Load of shite he does organise the defense,he may stay on his line but alot of the goals are just down to shocking marking.Take the two Sunderland goals the crosses were whipped in flat so no keeper would have come for them. It's now the in thing to say oh Given stayed on his line again, captain Kolo has a fair bit to answer for.
Also his distribution is decent some of the low kicks he sends out the wide players are very good. Can look bad at times when he kicks it down the middle whilst our 6-3 striker stands and watches it,might see a difference now we actually have a target man though.

THIS. our defence needs to book up, not shay.

But where do you stand on Mark Hughes' view of Dec 2008 that the defence playing shit is massively influenced by the keeper?

Personally I reckon that it is influenced to a degree but it is influenced much more by the coaching, system and managament put in place by those leading it. Oh, and that Hughes is a compete bullshitter who would say anything and blame anyone for his own failures?

Shay is unquestionably a fantastic shot stopper! FACT!

but....

A keeper plays a massive part in organising a back line... particularly at set peices.

Since Shay came into the team wwe have looked shambolic defensivly... een the collossus that is Richard Dunne, looked shakey in front of Given last season.

Defense was for a long time our strength... this coincided with a string of former world class keepers in goal.. Schmichel, Seaman, James etc.

Shay came from Newcastle... a team also renouned for shambolic defending... particularly at set pieces!

coincedence?????

(TIN HAT ON!)
jog on!

Everyone needs to remember that he is quite a short keeper which will effect his confedence and ability to come for crosses, thats not to say he is a world class keeper because he is playing to his strengths and playing within his hight.

Well everyone commented that the defense did look much more organised last season after Shay signed.Towards the end of last season when Neds and Dunnie were playing together every week we were starting to look quite solid.Obviously the new defenders coming in this season have not worked out upto now but that is for another thread.

He wont leave his line, Toure is shit in the air ,who bought them, and stuck them together, and organised the defensive formation, all I know is I am far more nervous on high crosses with SG than I was with JH.

this is the defenders problem not shays.

No, his place is not a given. Nobody's is when you get a new manager. Joe Hart will leave the club in the summer, and Mancini may feel the need to bring another keeper in as Taylor is dire. He will most likely look to serie a, and there are a lot of quality keepers in that league, like Marco Amelia, for example. If he was to bring in his own keeper, who is to say he wont prefer his own signing over Shay Given? It's not unfeasible. As i said, we have a new manager, so we have no idea what he feels about certain players in our squad.

I have an idea lets put Taylor in goal and watch as hilarity ensuses.

I can just imagine it now, a couple of megs, a couple of miss kicks and 4 or 5 lobs.

Before half time we will be down by double figures.

I'd put my bollocks on Shay being number one for the rest of the season, new manager or not. Surprised this "issue" has come up so often on this site.

I think the op makes some fair points TBH

At the moment YES - first name on the sheet

Shay has been awesome signing for us - but command of his area is not his strongest point.

Probably one of the best shop stoppers out there but are there better all round keepers?

I believe without blue tinted glasses the answer may well be yes

I wouldn't be surprised for City to make a bid for Buffon - consider Given gets injured Taylor for me is not a good enough standard to step in.

Admitadly we have Hart on loan who is a great young British talent but would be great to have someon actually compete with Given for his position.

With the new owners they believe that there should be competition for every position so why would Goalkeeper be different?
