Is the Champions League worth it?

I have grown up in the CL era and for me the European Cup is the be all and all.

Other way round for me.

Winning in the Premiership is the be all and end all for me. I'd instantly trade our wins in Europe for 3 more points in the League

Same here, but make it 5 or 6 points! I know there's kudos attached to competing in (and progressing in) the CL, but the domestic league is the most important trophy for me. At this stage anyway. Win 2 or 3 PL titles, then we can start thinking about a really serious attempt to win the CL. Not before.

Winning champions league when you are fouth or fifth in the league is not the same as winning it with a league title. Everyone would just think it's a fluke. Only the clubs who win it as doubles and trebles are rightly known as the best in Europe that season. Barcelona when they won 2 over 4 seasons never dropped below 2nd in the league, same with Bayern Munich and they are right considered the best teams in Europe when they won it. European form builds on great domestic league form. Being 8th place in domestic league is no way going to help contend for the Champions League.

Win a couple of PL titles and then build on that to win the Champions League.

what is the point of having a large expensive squad, if it isn't to go for both. We still have a need for better players, (glaring, in some cases) and needless rotation weakens us further but top 4 and a semi-final would be a step upwards for me. If we played the kids in the cups to help us in the prem still may not work because the real problem is the away form, not tired players.

Winning premiership games is what it is about and winning /drawing enough games away from home is what its about when it comes to upping the level you need to beat the more credentialled sides in the knock out stages.

We are a long way off these benchmarks at present.

As someone who has spent 20 years slagging off Champions League its Premiership for me every time, possibly because we had 4 more chances to sort it out i wasnt overly bothered as Bayern took us to the cleaners, probably feel different when its knock-out but my mindset wasnt "oh ffs we gonna need some away goals and a clean sheet in Munich"

I'd feel empty walking to the ground even if it was against Barcelona and Messi if I knew we weren't going to be in it next season

If we beat Spurs before we play Plzen then all will be well in the world again.

As fans I suspect most would rather see us win the PL but, as a club, the CL is more important for all sorts of reasons.

That's how I see it as well. I'd take winning the league over the CL all day but feel the club see it different. That's their perogative and I can see their logic. I suppose it's down to the fact we hadn't won it in my lifetime before that magical day in 2012. It'd be nice to feel like I did that day (and many months after) a few more times.
