Istanbul CL Final chaos | City Matters statement (p 133)

Just a reminder exactly what UEFA told us just in case they try and change the narrative about the metro:

This was also clearly a lie:
All shuttles are fully accessible.

It all reads like a sick joke.
I don't recall them telling us we could not use the metro before we got there. I booked a hotel on the yellow line thinking that would be easier to get to the ground. Get to the metro on match day to be told metro was closed and I had to take a bus. Reality was no buses around and ended up taking a taxi. Taxi could not get close to ground initially because police blocked roads. Eventually get taken the long way around but road into Man City side is blocked off so taxi takes me to the inter end. Credit to inter fan, absolutely no issues. Ended up waking from inter end to man city fan park in the heat for around 20 mins. Luckily taxi driver did not rip me off.

After the match I decided to walk back (around an hour), glad i did having read the issues people faced at the fan park. Had to walk down the dual carriageway but traffic at standstill, that was safer than the 'pavement' which had holes you could fall through. I'm sure the uefa dignitaries did not have the same experience and clearly not much thought given to the fans.

Again, did you go straight to the Metro after the game? Any queues? (I'm trying to establish how quickly the Inter fans got away.)
I got the metro shortly after 1 after the players had been past the stands with the cup. Took probably 20 mins to get to the metro. Got a seat on the first one then had to stand for the second one to near Taksim but it wasn’t overcrowded, probably 2/3 Inter fans on it. The third train wasn’t too crowded either. Was eating a kebab in Taksim shortly after 2 and having a beer at Nevizade before 2:30. Got a message from some mates who were still in the car park at the stadium. Didn’t get back to accommodation in Sultanahmet until 6am but that was nothing to do with public transport issues!!

Did you go straight to the Metro after the match? We looked at the bus park first and sacked that off. By the time we got to the Metro (after 1 am) there were no queues. 8 metro trains could shift 20,000 fans (= 400 buses).
We left Istanbul centre at 8pm, got the metro. No hassle, no queues, ten min walk to city end. After the game got metro back to Yenkapi; the tram flew back, direct, no stops in between, we were sat down settled at a great bar by 2am.
UEFA tried scaring everyone into getting there early, going to the fan parks, making sure City fans didn’t use Metro. Absolute bollocks. The metro was brilliant.

Are any of us surprised?

UEFA have astonishingly declined to comment on the logistical chaos at last weekend's Champions League final, despite a litany of shortcomings presented to it by Mail Sport after interviews with Manchester City fans.

Pretty much exactly what we did. Including the 6am in bed in Sultanahmet!
As the sun was rising on the Bosporus...

Why do we boo UEFA, surely still can’t be justified can it! Fines were being one minute late on the pitch greater than those for racis. Nope can’t be that. Banning fans after transport and accommodation had been paid for but letting home fans in, nope can’t be for that reason. Pandering to clubs demands / wishes and fixing a competition through to ensure that rich clubs continue to become richer unless they are totally shit, whilst smaller clubs stay small. Nope not that either. Concocting a fictional set of rules and then changing them, nope. Ffs can someone help me here?

My experience was definitely not as bad as some but there were issues.
We ( my daughter and me) were sightseeing on the morning of the game and the others in our group had booked a shuttle bus from Kadikoy to the fan park at the ground , not the Yenikapi one we were headed to.
A few hundred yards from the Yenikapi park we encountered friends walking the other way describing carnage in the park and huge queues for the buses. They had a taxi booked . We made a quick decision to take the Metro . An inspired choice obviously as it was pretty seamless despite the two changes to get to the ground . We had to show tickets at the stadium station where we were kettled through a single gate . This would’ve been far worse as it got closer to the kick off time . Pretty poor all told .
We walked through the Inter fans and another ticket check without issues and made our way to the Fan park where my mates were waiting . This bit, for me personally , wasn’t too bad despite the ludicrous pricing . The staff were constantly offering the tip jar up tome but my contactless card wouldn’t work for some reason ;)
Anyway, no real dramas here for a while until it became apparent that our bar was the only one left that had beer meaning all the other City fans came over . One member of staff then started offering cans for cash at €10 each . I got five and game him €10 for the lot . The wanker.
Left to get to the stadium and once again we were being kettled through the TV vans to a pavement near Entrance R that was already overflowing . The crowd getting in to R grew until there was no movement on the pavement whatsoever and people were beginning to push from behind us . A few tried to climb the fences on to the road that was used to shuttle the UEFA Wankers and were unceremoniously chased and pushed back by the Police, who did absolutely fuck all else to stop the crushing.
Eventually, they had to shift the barriers and City fans poured on to the road and around the stadium . It must’ve been a shock to the guy in the blacked out Mercedes with security guards running alongside the car when City fans started banging on his car windows asking him to get out . Could’ve got messy here as the security were plain clothes and definitely armed. Luckily , the car got through and we continued round .
Went to the ground, watched us win the treble, got my new seat scars and left.

This is when I made the mistake of going to meet my mates who had the shuttle bus booked to take us back . I wanted to get the Metro but was advised it’d be easier . I don’t need to add to the stories of carnage in that car park but the taxi driver had made the mistake of travelling right in, meaning we were almost at the back of the queue . Two and a half hours getting on to the road and an hour back to the hotel . What I did notice was the lack of celebration from any City fan . You’d have thought we’d been beaten although with the conditions, this was understandable.
Watching folk in that car park still makes me sick now. Not just the folk in wheelchairs, but anyone with walking difficulties, anyone with children, anyone in large groups etc etc. It was an absolute shitshow and I can only hope that UEFA are brought to book for it .
Istanbul was amazing , we never felt threatened, weren’t ripped off ( thanks to kerem btw) and had great interaction with many locals . I’d go back in a heartbeat .
Fuck UEFA though .
can’t wait to boo the cunts anthem even louder next season .

Of course the main blame lies with uefa but you really don’t think that City don’t have a duty of care towards 20k to 25k of our supporters? Given Turkey isn’t an easy country, given they know what horrible negligent cunts uefa are you don’t think they should have done some risk assessment and checking in advance? Pretty sure that Alex from liverpool, City sorry, Matters, said that City had conducted a risk assessment then I suggest we did a shit job. It’s now over a week after the event and still not a word of support for us from our club, pathetic
I'm told they did a number of site visits and raised concerns with UEFA around various matters. But they said nothing to us, the fans who were going, and seemingly shrugged their shoulders and placed reliance on UEFA to get it right on the night. Which we know they didn't.

And over a week later, there's still been nothing official from the club about the issues we all faced, many of which they knew in advance we'd be facing. Rob Draper and others have done and said more than Soriano or Danny Wilson. It really, really annoys me and I wonder now why I wasted 4 years on City Matters continually banging my head against a fucking wall trying to represent my fellow season ticket holders.

Instead of booing, here's the words to sing to the anthem...

DELETE ALL:

Ils sont les meilleurs
Sie sind die Besten
These are the champions

Die Meister
Die Besten
Les grandes équipes
The champions

AND SING INSTEAD:

Nous sommes les meilleurs!
Wir sind die Besten!
We are the champions!

UEFA is shit!
Put fans at risk!
Leave us in car parks!
They're fraudsters...

Watched the celebrations for a bit and then headed straight to the Metro. It was a mix of City and Inter fans, no issues or hint of trouble at all. I would say more inter fans but a decent percentage City fans

Wouldnt say there were queues, it was more a case of it being absolutely rammed but no queues to actually get on

Whereas on the way there we had to change 3 times I think, on the way back we had to change once and then it was straight through to Taksim Sq from there. Metro didn't stop at any of the intermediate stations like it did on the way there.

I knew the buses would be a disaster from previous experience at the 2021 final where it took hours to get away.
