Istanbul CL Final chaos | City Matters statement (p 133)

We left Istanbul centre at 8pm, got the metro. No hassle, no queues, ten min walk to city end. After the game got metro back to Yenkapi; the tram flew back, direct, no stops in between, we were sat down settled at a great bar by 2am.
UEFA tried scaring everyone into getting there early, going to the fan parks, making sure City fans didn’t use Metro. Absolute bollocks. The metro was brilliant.
Left the centre at 8pm and got back to a bar after the game at 2am. I'm following you on the next Uefa 'organised' event.

I've emailed my MP asking him to ask the sports minister

(a) whether his department is making any investigations into the transport arrangements at the Uefa champions league final in Istanbul which put UK citizens at risk and (b) whether arrangements for the final at Wembley next year will be properly coordinated to prioritise ordinary fans rather than corporate attendees.

Each MP getting similar requests might carry some weight. Tell them your own story.

Any EU citizens / residents can try their MEP...

on talksport last week they had John Stapletons son on talking about the problems. later spoke to the GMP officer who was there and to be fair was has horrified as most of our fans. He mentioned that the officer in charge of London next year was in attendance and she ended up help several disabled fans get across the gravel so you would hope that this be done.

I honestly believed UEFA thought City would win and that's why Inter got the Metro. This way Inter fans would be quickly gone whilst City fans were still in the stadium. Their coaches to Taksim would have been cleared by the time City made their way there. It was a gamble by UEFA that paid off to stop fans mingling, but ended up as a shitstorm for us blues.
But as we know UEFA don't give a fcuk about the fans.

We were fucked off by Police whilst trying to use the Metro (in City Shirts) from the station at Sikirchi trying to get to Yanakipi. There was clearly a predication by all to keep City fans off the Metro. This is because they all were shit scared of trouble between the 2 sets of fans. There was none - none at all and both sets did at times use the Metro with no problems. Whoever came up with moving 20K + fans, by bus, on a single entry and exit road, within a short time frame, should be publicly flogged (sacked at least). It was never going to work and looked logistically impossible because of the Istanbul traffic and proved to be exactly that. I was glad we weren't having to catch a flight out on the same night - there must be some nightmare stories. But as long as the VIP's made it to their helicopters and private jets in plenty of time - that's all that matters. UEFA should not be allowed to sweep another shit show under the carpet, which is exactly what is happening. Having spoken to GMP Officers on site at the stadium who knew exactly what was happening they've done what I thought they would do - fuck all!

When we had the UEFA Cup Final at the City of Manchester Stadium in 2008, all relevant authorities and organisations were in regular meetings with Uefa for about two years beforehand. There was a dossier/plan about an inch thick!
I suspect that what happened here was that the Turkish authorities overpromised and Uefa glibly accepted. Despite them effectively being on notice after what happened in Paris last year, Uefa answer to nobody.
For info, I have been provisionally invited to a meeting with GM Mayor Andy Burnham along with others to discuss what happened at the stadium. Feel free to email me in confidence at noel_bayley@yahoo.co.uk with any issues, comments or complaints. I will attend the meeting if I can but if I cannot I will ensure any emails are forwarded to the Mayor's Office.
Noel, is this you we met at the Crown and Anchor with your 84 year old pal who had a fall in Istanbul?
