That's exactly why our performances don't drop off, when we rotate the side.I don't understand this talk of back up. We have 2 players for each position that compeat against each other.
Would you call Laporte a back up to Ruben/John?
Would you call Gundogan a back up to Bernardo and KDB
2 players of equal quality or more in one position is brilliant. They both improve each other. Pep uses the entire squad and wants them to compeat against each other for the 1st team position.
Rice is quality. Would improve Rodri with Rice breathing down his neck. CDM is very important position in a Pep team. You need to get the right player. Rice is perfect.
We don't have back ups. Pep uses the entire squad.
However I just couldn't see us paying the fee required, or Rice wanting to come, if we have a nailed on starter in Rodri, if he leaves, it will be to a side without a star CDM, like we have.
You are allowed to have 17 non-homegrown players in the 25 man squad in PL, which means you that if you have fewer than 8 homegrown senior players you cant register a full 25-man squad. City currently have 7 homegrown senior players going into next season in the first team. Its not a immediate problem, but signing a good english player before it actually is a problem might not be the worst idea.

Cancelo, Zinchenko, Laporte, Wilson-Esbrand all played LB this season, think we'd be fine.But Ake covers our missing LB option when needed. I think if Ake leaves, we would spend far less on a CB replacement.
I think he will be off this summer, and he and West Ham will have many clubs knocking on their door, he will go for crazy money.
He won’t go for more that 100m if he goes. Chelsea will pay that.
