And? You get 2 or 3 years out of a player, repalce him, or replace one of the other ones that falls out of form or wants to leave or wont extend, or, it gives time for one academy product to develop and be ready to step up for when one of the 4 wants to leave.

So what as long as we get our money back. Better than a Laporte injury and Stones and Dias playing ever single game. That seems an unnecessary risk to me. Getting a cheap centre back not good enough or that doesn’t believe he is is money wasted.

A higher price tag doesn't guarantee success, especially when he wouldn't be playing week in and week out. He's just a flashy name when someone cheaper (the horror!) would solve multiple issues.

So where is the incentive for any of those 3 to maintain or push to improve if the know the other bloke was only employed as 4th choice?

Interesting if we do sign a top replacement for Ake. I figure the others all knew they were ahead of Ake, might be good to have a bit more motivation.

The price has no relevance I agree. The fact is we need a 4th centre back thats good enough to play games for us, potentially important games. As @Coatigan keeps saying not 4th choice, at the very worst 3rd choice more likely 2nd.
If he’s cheap great but going out looking for and buying a centre back that isn’t good enough just cheap and happy not to play, which is what you were saying, is a waste of money and a risk.

I don’t see how that would work. We can’t have basically 4 first choice centre backs and give them enough game or keep them happy. One will want to leave
