It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

Last season:

Ederson, Steffen, Carson
Walker, Cancelo, Zinchenko, Stones, Dias, Laporte, Ake
Fernandinho, Rodri, Gundogan, Bernardo, KDB
Sterling, Jesus, Torres, Mahrez, Foden, Grealish

(Palmer as that one youngster semi regularly involved)

That's 21.

I've not included Mendy because he just wasn't part of it at all. Torres I have, despite him going.

This season:
Ederson, Ortega, Carson

Walker, Cancelo, Zinchenko or Cucurella, Stones, Dias, Laporte, Ake

Phillips, Rodri, Gundogan, Bernardo, KDB

Haaland, Alvarez, Mahrez, Foden, Grealish, Palmer

(McAtee as that one youngster semi regularly involved)

That's 21, with Palmer now stepping up, which has been largely been accepted as what's happening, with McAtee to take his academy lad place. Hopefully too no one will leave in January meaning a fuller squad for the run in

That isn't a smaller squad mate. I guess people could argue about Palmer, but that's a quality debate not a sheer numbers one and we'll have to trust Pep and co on that that he's good enough to be one of the actual squad.

I think you either include Palmer in both, or you don't in either.

Regardless, we'd have 2 spare spaces in the squad for registered players, which is smaller than both our usual and the general usual.

City wouldn't use Martin like that, nor would he or Jack Gaughan allow themselves to be.

I fail to see what leverage we seek to gain selling Zin BEFORE buying a replacement, anyhow?

More likely the story we have accepted Arsenal terms but Zin is suddenly digesting the options.

Pep would never push the lad out and we have the money to buy another left-back, regardless.

Fuck Arsenal's dirty Emirati-sponsored money, we have enough of our own ;)
I bet xenophobic Alan Davies is in a darkened room deciding how to get his head around signing Jesus & possibly Zinchenko

Don't think McAtee would have signed his new contract without some sort of assurances
Yeah agreed. Both are done at u23's, they gain nothing from it now and need to get time on the pitch with the first team. Plenty of opportunity for it as well as we know its a long season with a lot of games, so no excuses. Thats why not buy more attacking / wide players actually is exciting for us rather than a negative. At least for me it is.

We've not really had Mendy since his first injury. Plus a few seasons ago we had 21 but no academy / U 21 really good enough to be considered first team players. So if we have 20 but Foden, Palmer and Mcatee getting first team starts we are better off.

Certainly sounds like City are briefing MB on the key negotiating positions they want to communicate.

I’d be interested to know your perspective on this mate - is it not more likely we’re using MB to set the narrative on Zin not being 100% done, us being relaxed on the LB position if he stays, and us not being willing to go near Brighton’s £50m valuation - all to set the context in our negotiations on Cucurella?

Essentially - we shouldn’t take the specifics as accurate. More a statement on the position we’re trying to put out there?

Or am I way overstating the role of the sports media in any of this stuff?

I’ve never believed that clubs negotiate or set their stalls out through the media.

I’m sure they just have a conversation and let’s each other know their positions.

Yeah it's defo that. They should simply just write down two XIs though and realise how fucking good our squad actually is when you think about it...and enjoy the change. It's necessary, and it's fun!

Agree it is great.

Couldn't really at FB though, not with true FBs (which to me includes zinchenko.

It is interesting, the whole 2 players for each position take, never is that rigid really.

We have 20 players for 11 positions. Plus youth. But not 2 for each position. Putting the 3 keepers aside which is simple enough, with all the flexibility the squad have, we have 7 for 4 positions in defense. And 10 for 6 positions in outfield. So in no area do we really have 2 for each, and maybe that is an expectation we need to shift on.

If Zinchenko yet again decides to stay and fight (will it be the 3rd time now?) then he might just be my favourite City player ever. This guy has all the qualities you dream of in players that play for the club you love. I still feel it’s more likely he actually leaves this time, but I respect the fact he’s giving staying some serious thought yet again. He knows the score, he knows he’s not first choice, but I think deep down he knows he has what it takes to get in this side. I think he’s already a cult hero, but this would really cement that.

He's the absolute epitome of what this club and its fans are about. He and we know, he's not the best footballer in the world but what he does is absolutely perfect for our setup. Fans absolutely fucking love him. Don't think I've ever wanted a player to stay as much as him and we've lost far more talented guys. Just sometimes, and only sometimes, it goes beyond world class. Same cunts that want him gone are the same cunts that wanted Zabs gone. Clubs need their legends.

I'd be as happy seeing him stay as I was when Erling signed.

I’m sure you’re right mate.

That said, it’s clear some Clubs are obsessed with setting their stalls out through the media - although I appreciate this is more to do with their fans than messaging directly to other Clubs.

Its also clear City use this less than others - for obvious reasons!

Depends, on if they are good enough to affect games in a meaningful way, or even good enough to play enough to give others a meaningful rest, like you would expect established players would. No issue trusting Pep on that btw.

Doesn't apply to Foden obviously, who has shown he is, but didn't do it suddenly, so a bit harsh to expect that of Palmer and McAree. As we previously did with Delap and others.

Some think 30m million is decent, I think it's not for such good cover. Good luck to him whatever he does
