I've been hearing about SMS leaving Lazio for a bigger club since 2018. I wonder why that hasn't happened yet. It's already been pointed out, but he's much more of an advanced midfielder than what Phillips and Rodri are.

I'm tired of fitting square pegs into round holes whenever we have an injury. We've been doing it at left back for a couple seasons and I don't want to do it at another position if we don't have to.

There's a difference, but why do it when you don't have to?

Is putting SMS in a position that isn't what he naturally does currently in a brand new league, in a brand new system under one of the most demanding managers in world football really worth it over signing a player like Phillips who both fits the system perfectly and whose floor is a good premier league player? Yeah, i'd prefer the player that's better. I am willing to even argue SMS would be a better "defensive mid" than phillips. the arguments for phillips so far have been extremely unconvincing and borderline copium.

I didn't buy anyone. And because Grealish had a season that didn't justify his price tag immediately the same must be true for Phillips? I didn't realise you had a crystal ball.

It's a significantly easier adaptation because he's played in something similar, it's in a position he's comfortable and it's not a brand new league. If you can't see that then I don't know what we're discussing.

I'll take the one that's better for the squad and it's needs. I don't know who is better at football overall and it's not like we're comparing a gulf of class like Messi and Lingard so it's a bit of a pointless discussion. I've only seen copium used on Twitch and Twitter, might be a BlueMoon first. Showing your age there!

interesting thought… but I can see absolutely no logic in that. Pep absolutely loves the day to day involvement and working with players to improve them… honestly think he hate watching endless games and very occasional involvement with players.

Burn out may, eventually, get to him. I can see a day he no longer wants the day to day pressure. Long time from now, I hope.

So 5m more all in (if he hits all the add ons) for a specialist in the role you want, over someone who isn't as good defensively in any metric and has the same pass completion. (for this seasons stats, last season KP was better at passing as well).

Not hard to see why hes not an option over Phillips (yet)
