It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

We now have a left footed left back. Similar to Zinchenko at the start of his career with us, albeit with more speed.

What we still don’t have is a “proper” left back, who you’d back to stop Salah scoring.
To be fair the way we play and Salah's ability I wouldn't be putting money on any left back to stop him scoring.

Which is why I’m slightly surprised it hasn’t been in Pep’s thinking. He’s all about stopping the opposition being able to attack.

Maybe he’s worked out a way to stop Salah receiving the ball.

Yes, but 21 registered and nobody good enough to add to it which is what we had until a couple of years ago is the same as 19 registered but having 2 players Foden and Palmer able to play meanigful minutes. As you point out Palmer remains to be seen , but if Peps happy that will do me.
Extreme example if we thought we had 12 club trained /u21 good enough to play ever week we wouldn't still need 21 registered players, 10 would be enough.

That is fair, can'treally disagree with that. The other thing we are ignoring, me more than you, is how good Pep is, to work with whatever squad he has.

Ultimately, whether it is enough or not, is a separate discussion, one I try and avoid. It is a matter of opinion and I get the other side.

What I do get drawn into is claims that the numbers are the same, which is just not true. Which then turns into a 'yeah but it is enough' discussion. As has happened here.

I still don't think it is, myself. I think this particular team and this manager at this time should be competing for all trophies, and last season has shown a smaller squad makes that damn difficult even for Pep, and it would be a pity to go into a 60 game season having to make do. That's all.

We were immature, and a bit rattled at the Bernabeu.

We were a couple of inches at home, from 5-0 in the first 35 minutes against Real.

Sometimes, it just doesn’t happen.

We lost the FA because our squad was simply not up for it.

We had a worse squad last season than this.

I feel we are better, matured, ripe in our actions, and will fuck team left right and centre this season.

If it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. One thing i can tell you, come April we’ll be there.

Erling would have had 5 himself in the Madrid game at home! Lol

I can understand people having concerns about the size of the squad. We are a few serious injuries away from a nightmare scenario in some positions (altough that can be said of any side) but at the same time we have a young, hungry, flexible and exciting squad this season.

If you look through the squad there are a few specialists in certain positions but most of our players can play several positions and that's what Pep will like about it. We have upgraded I would say overall on the quality of the squad based on the incoming and outgoings.

If you look through the squad, barring the goalkeepers, Dias and Haaland (who are specialists) every single player can cover 2 or more positions and that gives Pep the option he needs:

Ederson (GK)
Ortega (GK)
Carson (GK)
Walker (RB, CB)
Cancelo (RB, LB - he could probably play midfield too)
Stones (CB, RB)
Dias (CB)
Laporte (CB, LB)
Ake (CB, LB, DM)
Gomez (LB, CM, LW, RW)
Rodri (DM, CM, CB)
Phillips (DM, CM, CB)
KDB (CM, RW, CF, false 9)
Bernardo (CM, LW, RW, false 9)
Gundagon (CM, false 9)
Foden (LW, RW, CM, CF)
Grealish (LW, CM)
Mahrez (RW, LW, CM)
Palmer (RW, LW, CM)
Alvarez (LW, RW, CF)
Haaland (CF)

You can then add in some younger players aswell if needed to bulk the squad a bit.

I'd like another couple of players personally, but if Pep is content with what we have then we'll make it work. With the world cup in the middle of the season, it means we'll play less games between now the winter market so the club can always reassess and buy then if they feel they're short.

Id be fine with a small squad, if there were no injury issues with players. Realistically a group of players in that squad have fitness issues. Most the problems are in defence, with the amount of games next season Cup competitions internationals, World Cup it's a major worry with our squad and some members

KDB ankle issues will he be fine at the world cup / after or is he over that now

Phillips brought his injury issues from Leeds over little niggles he had at Leeds last season and now he has them again . Last season showed he couldn't stay fit

Laporte knee issues already out and we've seen how bad knee recovery can be

Stones can't stay fit for a whole season

Ake injury issues through his career was injured last season multiple times

Gundogan back issues has he got over them and can he stay fit for a season

Palmer young talent but was injured the majority of last season, now injured again which is annoying as he's a talent

We would have to hope/ be lucky that certain players are over their injury issues otherwise we could be in the second end of the season. With an even smaller squad and a crisis in certain areas of pitch.

Our bench makes me nervous for the long run. It makes me even more nervous that we might still sell Bernardo!!

I wonder at what point those that don’t think we need more players will change their mind?
