I just can’t see two top quality midfielders signing in January. One in Jan and one in the summer fair enough as players may move on. We traditionally have a small squad and have plenty of position less players to rotate around. It will be 1 midfielder and 1 centre back in my opinion

Not when the club is struggling for form and has to uproot his family and fully adapt to both a new league and culture in a short period. Flip that in the summer he has more time to prepare even at the end of that particular window. Sometimes the money isn't worth the hassle if you are settled at your current club.

Why does the club's form matter? For example Chelsea made a huge amount of signings when they were lingering mid table and couldn't buy a win.

Every move comes with pressure no matter when it happens. If anyone were to sign in January it would give them an extra few months to bed in given that its highly likely we are out of the race for the league.
