Firstly, losing either Gundo or Bernardo and bringing in Kovacic as their replacement would be utterly laughable. If you lose players of that calibre, you need to replace them with world class talent, whether that's the finished article or a player with undeniable potential. Kovacic is neither.
Even if we're signing him as a squad player in addition to the midfield options we already have, it still makes little sense to me. Yes, he's a decent player and would fit in well enough. But if Pep feels we're a little light in the middle then surely keeping one or both of Doyle/McAtee around the squad next season, or using Lewis there as he did on Sunday, would make more sense than signing an injury prone 29 year old on their last big contract, who isn't even that good.
I struggle to believe that we're going to give Kovacic the 4 or 5 year deal he'd no doubt want when we're not prepared to give Gundogan a straight 2 year deal at the age of 32.
Mount is the one we should be all over. It looks like he's decided to leave, and his quality, versatility, work rate and intelligence would be perfect for us. He's no Foden, but he's a great player.
In fact, I'd take Loftus Cheek over Kovacic.
