It's Quiet - a new dawn

I think it's likely we're going to get something along the lines of:
Ederson
Van Dyke
Walker
Mendy
Tielemens

That's probably going to cost north of £200m, and not of them are really anything to get excited about. But they're probably exactly what we need.

We've spent the last couple of summers getting excited about Sané, Sterling, Moreno, Zinchenko, Jesus, DeBruyne, even Roberts to an extent. It's easier to get excited about attacking players. But in truth, we've needed to invest in some world class full backs for a long time.

I think this summer should be one where we make all the signings the team actually needs and don't worry too much about how "marquee" they are.
Surely, if they are exactly what we need, we should be excited about them - or am I missing something?

1. He didn't do too bad against Sanchez and Hazard. And he'd be a back up RB.

2. Maffeo is not ready yet.

3. If you have actually watched him at RB then you wouldn't think so. In midfield he is awful, but used to give us good balance down the right flank before other managers realized he was a one trick pony.

Agree on your last two paragraphs there. But is signing two quality right backs really going to help us play catch up with Chelsea?

Agreed. Many are just too excited about seeing youngsters in our first team. Maffeo was great in the cup against the rags and then was absolutely average and looked lost at times in the CL game vs Celtic. He is not ready yet to play for us. We are going to make a big money signing at RB and bringing him as a back up will not do him any good knowing he will pretty much have no chance to actually compete for top spot.

He can go on loan again to Girona, get some invaluable first team experience playing against some of the best players in the game in La liga. If he performs really well we can bring him back and let him challenge our RB for the starting role or go on loan again. By that time he'll still only be 21.

Navas getting a one year extension is great business. He'll play back up RB and emergency winger. Unfortunately we can't sign 2 right backs, 2 left backs, 2 keepers etc etc like some are hoping for.

Sport on

Sign a LB, RB, CB

Keep Kolarov LB and CB cover Navas RB cover

I think we're all on the same page in that any manager must have the freedom to reshape the squad as they see fit; acting upon what he sees on the pitch, in training and behind the scenes. Apart from Guardiola who must obviously do this but also meet the expectations and emotional needs of each and every individual Manchester City fan because otherwise he's arrogant, stubborn and insufferably bald.

People would whinge about Sergio leaving the same way that they still whinge about Hart leaving. A lot of them would be the people who reel off cliches like "players come and go but blah blah blah" in other situations but actually ignore those words and hold on to a grudge with the manager who dared to sell their fave player.

This isn't a democracy, folks. Thank fuck.
Haha.... I know that line. :-)

Spot on, it's good to see some logic on here. A lot of people have their blue tinted specs on when it comes to our youngsters, but it never actually works out as easy as they want. It's usually between the ages of 21-23 and takes several loans before these players start stepping up. All that's required is a bit of patience.

What is your opinion based on? Have you watched him at Girona?

Of course I've not watched him for Girona, anyone who says they have are probably bullshitting.

But I have kept an eye on their results and any plaudits their players get. But I'm basing my opinion on how Pep's kept him for half a season and given him to his brother for the other half. I'm also guessing that he'll be on loan again next season as we're linked with a high money move for who will be our first choice RB, and how a very highly reliable journalist has stated we're giving a contract extension to Navas so he can be our back up RB. So as it stands there is no room for Maffeo and it looks like our manager (the one who's opinion actually matters) doesn't think he's ready yet either. He's 19, has had a season and a half of first team experience in a lower league and still has plenty of time to improve, impress and nail down a spot with us. There's no rush at all and in fact it makes so much more sense to give him more time in a team where he is actually playing instead of wasting his time in the reserves not even making our bench.

Just out of curiosity what is it you're basing your opinion on?

Patience is fine but you are also requiring us to play Navas at RB so its not as simple as you make out.

Last summer we desperately needed 2 CBs. Instead we got one and Kolarov.

We also need 1 LB and 1 RB. Instead we got Clichy, Kolarov, Sagna, and Zabs.

Making due with what we had and being patient cost us dearly this past summer.

If Maffeo is not ready, fine...but the answer is not Navas.

I have seen very little of Maffeo. The games I have watched him in, he has looked good.

I have seen literally every minute Navas has played for us. He has not looked good. He works hard...that is it.
