I have seen very little of Maffeo. The games I have watched him in, he has looked good.
I have seen literally every minute Navas has played for us. He has not looked good. He works hard...that is it.
You just said you think Maffeo is currently as good as Navas, without actually seeing much of Maffeo.
But I get what you're saying, in an ideal world it'd be amazing if we could supplement our first team with all our academy prospects. Unfortunately it rarely work out that way. If we were to get rid of Navas (who has played well at RB, so much so he's now our first choice) and bring in a main RB target like Walker, then we'd still need a back up option.
That would mean either bringing Maffeo into contention, where he gets an occasional game, hampering his progression because he's not playing nearly enough games to improve. Or we bring in another RB to play second fiddle to Walker on a minimum of a 3 year deal and thus minimizing Maffeo's chances of game time, hampering his progression.
Or we could just offer the player who's out of contract in a few months a new deal, where he can play when required and isn't tied to a long contract while our youngster can go out to a loan club where he plays week in, week out.
If you're worried about Navas still being a City player next season, watch the next game he plays closely. He's been decent in his new role and more than capable of being second choice.
