It's Quiet - a new dawn

I'd prefer us to buy Veratti over Mbappe, Sanchez or pretty much any player in the world except Messi. He's probably the best box to box midfielder in the world and has an insatiable desire to win. He's exactly what we need.
Totally agree with you. It will be amazing to sign a player like Mbappe but we do have Aguero and Jesus and both of them are top quality , Veratti will improve us so much, I think he is the best player in the World in his position and we are really short in the midfield

Indeedy, so keep him at CB, sign another top CB (VVD, Laporte, Alderweirald if that rumour was true) and move Stones to midfield. Leadership at the back, passing in midfield, riches in attack
I still haven't seen much to convince me that Stones is a particularly good passer. By CB standards he's great with the ball at his feet but really not a patch on Kolarov or Fernandinho and even Kompany and Otamendi look equally good playing out from the back at this point.

Stones isn't a great passer, what he's great at is bringing the ball out of defence, and getting past the first man. At some point people seem to have mistaken being good at bringing the ball out from the back, for being a fantastic passer, but they're completely different things, and Stones' passing is miles below the likes of Otamendi let alone Bonucci or Boateng.

What I will say though is that Otamendi's passing is miles better than it was 9 months ago, so Stones could definitely improve and get to the level of those guys. There's signs he's got the skill, he does occasionally hit a long bass that is brilliant or plays a great through ball, but it's pretty embryonic at the moment in my opinion.

Similar to how people think being composed, engaging your brain and putting some thought into your distribution translates as "decent with his feet".

John and the rest aren't supposed to be splitting entire teams open with laser precision passing all the time (although the ability to do so is a huge plus). Stones ability to shimmy around an oncoming challenge or two means that those further down the pitch are going to end up with more room and time on the ball.

There was a good debate about it between Carragher and Henry but I wouldn't know where to find it. The latter clearly appreciated this style of play from teammates like Pique as it helped him at the other end of the pitch.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yeah eaxactly, the whole point is to take opposition players out of the game and give your team "numerical superiority" and if you can do that by just taking the ball past that first line of defenders, it's the easiest and most reliable way to do it.

The best can all pass well though, and you'd think at some point Pep would like to see Stones hit a few of those passes Boateng does which just bypass the whole midfield as it's the best way to get past a really aggressive pressing side, and with Klopp and Pochettino around, being able to beat high pressing teams will probably have a big impact on our league position in the next few years.

He's certainly got it in him to pull it off. I can't remember them off the
top of my head but he's played a few decent long passes this season. I also thought he was by far our best player in the 2-0 loss to Spurs at White Hart lane and looked like the only player unfazed by their press. If anything, it seemed to play to his strengths.

Didn't Stones used to play some at Everton and for England? I don't recall him being great but could he do a job as a back up? Maybe freeing up some funds to buy at another position?
Given our track record at signing midfielders and centre halves, I'd rather spend a third of the fee on a great holding mid than move Stones there and buy a centre half.

Well Kompany and Otamendi are making a pretty good pairing just now. I'd actually like to see Stones play in the deeper midfield role like Busquets. It's a bit more forgiving for his style of play because he'll have players behind him if he runs into trouble.

Get the feeling we will sign good solid players for the positions we need personally don't think a super star signing will happen maybe Sanchez if Bayern don't snap him up.

Same here, especially players in their early 20s. We've been linked with Gelson Martins recently. I'll be so happy if we manage to get him.
