It's Quiet the £250m return

The quality of the squad will get clearer in the 2nd half of the season when we integrate the new players and Rodri has several months under his belt. I expect at least 5-6 of the relatively new players (counting those signed in January as well) to be starters come January: Donna, Khusa, RAN, Reijnders, Marmoush/Cherki and Gonzalez. We may sign a RB in January, if Pep hasn't found a solution by then (Khusa?).

I wouldn't swap our squad for Liverpool's or Arsenal's. Liverpool are very reliant on VVD (34) and Salah (33) and are a bit short on options at CB. We have a better spine than Arsenal. A lot of work is needed, though. Whether we can compete this season is anyone's guess. It will be difficult, as we are likely to drop many points before Christmas. Maybe we will have more of a chance in the CL.
The dippers are not reliant on Salah they’ve just bought Isak and Ekitike.

We are more than one or two windows off competing at the very top again.

Sadly, we are now in the position some of our rivals were in when they were chasing us.

We have to hope Liverpool and Arsenal run out of serious money, otherwise they can add one big name a year to maintain any type of gap.

Worryingly, I also see a point where Liverpool can raise £150m selling Salah and Van Dijk to Saudi, having boxed their extensions.

Not sure if we’re that far off in that Liverpool have gone all out in extending Salah and Van Dijk (no way they get big money for them next summer), spent £420m to replace their fullbacks and forwards and a very creative midfielder. They are going to have to alter their setup to accommodate Wirtz. They also don’t have enough midfield cover or indeed cover for Van Dijk. It’s probably between themselves and Arsenal for the league this season but nothing certain. Liverpool seem to be trying to plan for the post Salah future but their failure to land Guehi might be costly. Konate’s contractual issue could be a problem as well.

Arsenal similarly all in with the signings of Zubimendi, Eze, Gyokeres and Hincapie on top of Mosquera, Kepa, Madueke and Norgaard. I think it’s now or never for them and after Sunday I would be leaning towards never.

Next summer we’re likely to get a bit more headroom with Oretega, Bernardo and Stones out of contract, Akanji, Kovacic and Ake all in their final years. Means the likes of Bah, Reis, Echeverri and Nypan are effectively auditioning for spots next reason. Perhaps we’ll go back for MGW. Fill those spots well next summer then we’re in a good position. Our recruitment this summer has been decent in respect of the players brought in but obviously it’s the positions we didn’t bring in that rankle.

And you've just done it again...
No, I haven't. Who are you to say how far back we should compare signings? Go back 3 years if you like, our business since the treble has been sub-par and the dippers have capitalised while spending similar amounts to level is behind.

Even looking at this window in isolation - they've spent about £100m more than us but imo have upgraded significantly on the back of already dominating the league

Along with the spine previously mentioned Phil Foden is absolutely necessary in this semi transitional phase . If the coaches/ management can get him back to the kind of form and quality we have seen from him before then we should be able to compete close to the top.

It’s a transitional season so our expectations should be a gradual player improvement throughout the season, when you have so much change it will take time us fans will moan I will but it’s a process, the standard we had has dropped and we were never going to carry on that standard. It should be winning league once at least every 3/4 years, we have seen the likes of the rags(26/12^) Liverpool(30) Chelsea(8) go years without a league title what we want is not to let it get past at least 5/6 years!

Disagree. One solid fullback on each side now will radically alter this team
Theres also Gvardiol to come back in and Rodri in a few months time will hopefully be the balon d or Rodri or at least not far off it. Forgot about Phil as well hopefully he can put this spell behind him and come back to what he was.
Donnarumma
Gvardiol
Rodri
Haaland
That’s comfortably one of the best spines in the league

Without injuries the team could look like this , going to put in who I think we should sign at right back I think the wings could be improved.

Donnarumma
Cambiaso - Gvardiol - Dias - Ait Nouri
Rodri
Cherki/foden - Reijnders

Savinho. - Haaland. - Doku

Doku is the one standing out to me Savinho has shown with his assists that there is something there. Doku hasn’t shown any progression since when we first signed him.

Savinho and Doku are as much an issue as having no RB in my opinion. Neither are anywhere near productive enough, they create little and score very few goals. We are going into the season with only Haaland and potentially Marmoush as goalscorers, with nothing backing them up from attacking midfield/wings yet again.

We should have bitten Spurs’ hand off for that £60m for Savinho.

Really does make you weep over tossing our superiority in the bin after winning the champions league.

Because Isak wanted out lol
But that's the point - he learned of Liverpool's interest and shithoused his way out of Newcastle. What's to say Olise wouldn't be tempted by a move back to England if he knew that a top club was interested? He might not be quite so brazen and brat-like about it, but to think Olise is locked in at Bayern would be to underestimate things.

Fair point, but Salah has been much more than a goalscorer. If both Wirtz and Isak perform as expected (not guaranteed), then they won't be reliant on Salah (47 GA last season).

I think Ekitike would be an option from the bench. Gakpo will be the main man on the left: he's good but not Diaz good.

Also, it will be interesting whether Isak can press like Liverpool's former strikers. He's highly talented, but I doubt that Gakpo and him can press as intensely as Diaz and Jota/Nunes. These days Salah doesn't offer much in terms of pressing either.

On paper, Liverpool have improved a lot. Let's see what happens.

Maths not your strong point either?

£446m-£180m=£266 million more than us.

Just ignoring sales then? Ok

260m euro net minus 136m euro net. 124m euro difference which equates to £106m difference.

How's your maths?

I might be throwing out a weird theory but I think the club want Cambiaso but we couldn’t get him due to having no slot/space for him. If we had room I think we would’ve tried

Interesting thought. I think we would have made space for him or anyone we identified as a target, that we could get. We didn't have space for any of Cherki, Reijnders and Ait-Nouri when we signed them. Maybe happy to wait as you say.

He may however have shat the bed with his money comments, sounded a bit bitter.

People talk like we were the only team with a squad when we won the treble. Ffs Liverpool have had excellent squads for a decade now. The best players in the world each respective position, if you go by the media claims and award categories. They were after their own trebles in at least two years straddling ours.

When did this idea that we were the best because we had the best lists and others had nothing come from. They always had good squads. They have now improved, but it is not like they were a nonentity all this time.

Lol

It seems the Club took the decision that none of the RB options on the market this summer were worth progressing at the prices their current teams valued them at - so rather than actively buying a player they didn’t think was up to standard, who would likely be difficult to shift in future years, they decided to keep their powder dry til January and re-evaluate.

We can all agree or disagree with that position, but I doubt the RB position will remain unaddressed in future windows.

What we’ve been very effective at is clearing out a lot of over the hill players from what was a bloated squad list - giving us the room to act decisively in future windows.

It’s clear that our excessive non-homegrown list was a problem this summer, which meant we couldn’t have moved on a number of potential targets even if we’d wanted to.

This won’t be the case in January.

KDB, Eddie and Akanji are all out of the squad now, with Gundo rumoured to follow over the next few days.

Kyle and Jack are also gone, with their places now freed up for others to play.

Providing Gundo goes through, and we’re happy to drop Ortega from the CL squad from January, then we are in a position to move for the right player at RB in January.

It’s been a frustrating window in many ways, particularly in the immediate term - but we’re building for the future and have made clear progress on that.
