I get the family part of his statement that’s understandable but..in my opinion he’s bottled this as I knew he would all along , when he sent his letter of intent he didn’t even have the front to deliver it in person to the president he sent a fax !! It’s like the Ryder cup all this it comes round every two years and so does he.
He’s retires from playing for Argentina every time they have a bad result.
Pleased this is all over let the circus leave town
And let us all move on.
Not bottled
He wants to leave and has said so
He isn’t gonna start a war, why should he
£700m is A lot to fight about
He quits Argentina And then gets begged to return

I think the fact he's mentioned his family will cause the opposite effect to be honest, no matter what's on the table it won't make him move if it causes his family to be unhappy.

He's now got 3 months to sulk and moan after training every day to change their minds ;-)

I'm sure though the first people he would have considered before putting in his request to leave would have been his family.
He clearly knew their views and yet still went ahead with his request possibly against their wishes?

The more I think about it, the more I believe he would have had a damn good chance of winning in court. 10th June was not the end of the season anywhere – Covid 19 changed everything – and I believe his lawyers could have made that stick. It's neither here nor there, of course. He didn't want to go to war with the club he grew up with, the club that for a long time were family to him. I can understand that. No problems, Leo. We never made a bid, we don't look stupid. As for Barca, they've got the most expensive player on earth, and he doesn't want to play for them. They come out of it with no dignity whatsoever.

If you truly want to move on perhaps you should leave the thread?

Still loving this. It's been much more entertaining than the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, at any rate.

My question for people who think this is a move inviting a bid: what do you think happens when we put that bid in?

Because I seriously think Bartomeu won't accept anything other than a world record one.

He's got the best player in the world to honour his contract. Would he have looked better if he'd let him go for free?

Every year, Messi is upset about the colour of the grass and is considering leaving until he gets a new deal. This year he's got nothing and by the time he leaves, he'll be 34 so good for MLS/China. He's played Messi like a banjo.

cant say I agree. If messi is crap at Barca this season now it’s all the president fault. Potentially ruined this season because the spotlight will shine extra bright and the pressure will be on. Any bad performances by messi is no longer messi’s fault is it?

This seems to get us to the position I, and many others, suspected.

Barca get some money, Messi gets to leave and City get their man.

Saves face for Barca then. Real got cash for Ronaldo and Barca can point to that to fend off any criticism now. He wanted out and we got a good fee (undisclosed). City let them leak whatever they like in terms of fee knowing the politics.
If Messi really wanted that then he would've done the same video without confirming he is staying.
You can't accuse Bartomeu of not being true to his word and then doing the same thing yourself.

By the way, for everyone like @bluesince76 saying Bartomeu has won...

There's currently a vote of no confidence going on to remove him, with 16,000 signatures needed in the next 2 weeks. After that interview, Bartomeu won't even be the president at the end of the transfer window.

His succession candidate will 100% lose the election, he will likely be saddled with millions of euros of fines becuase of the debt built up under his tenure, and Messi may still 'leave' during the official term of his presidency (signing a precontract in January).

All he has done is set in stone the already prevailing opinion that he is the worst president in Barcelona's history.

Why do people write hysterical bullshit like this, let alone spam it with likes.

You lot should all be banned from watching him play when he turns up in 2 weeks.

I'm making a comment on his character, not his football. You have no idea how disappointed i am in a player i have enjoyed watching for so long, as a neutral. There is a reason he hardly ever speaks, i see that now.

Genuinely, no issue with him wanting to stay, it is what he says about his club that i find embarrassing. I have been more than prepared for him not coming here for a variety of reasons, so it isn't sour grapes. And if you've read anything i've said on garcia or sane, i am not in the slightest sensitive to players putting their needs over a club's. This is a bit beyond that, it really is putting himself above the club, playing a martyr, and slaghing his club off at the same time. And that, would be coming with him to city, that can't go back in the box.
