It's Quiet thread 14 - 'do one' edition

I've had a think about the possible reasons for this weird window.

I think my original thought that lots of teams will sell for cash flow purposes is still correct.

However I didn't see the extent to which selling clubs would chance losing a buyer to get the best possible price.

My conclusion is that the last week will be crazy and that's when we will do our business. Until then it's whoever blinks first and not many, Valencia aside, have. From a monetary point of view we can afford to wait and rightly or wrongly that is what I think we are doing.

We can't judge till 16 days time.

The clubs at the top can't free up squad places by selling their jaded stars because the clubs below them can't afford to meet their existing wage commitments, never mind take on the high wages of an ex-top team player on the way down the ladder.
My guess is that we'll get a couple more in and sell a few, but it'll be done late in the window as we'll be working hard to agree swaps where we can and I suspect that we'll ultimately end up selling a few players for not a lot more than nothing, just to free up places and get their wages off the books.

This is the reality of a scenario where football clubs at all competitive levels were working with pretax profits of less less than 5% of turnover and then they get their income suddenly cut by more than 20% and with further pain on the horizon.
If covid measures continue through to the end of this season, then I think we'll see some bargains out there as the less prudent clubs hit the rocks and are forced to shed their highest earners in an attempt to stay afloat.
My thought is that, if we can trim our squad, even by relocating some players into our sister clubs, and keep hold of some of our transfer budget, then I recon we'll do well in the January window, when clubs start listening to their accountants, or next summer when they're in receivership and there's a fire sale on the go.

1. we move on from last season into a new one - reset everything> Maguire has hardly been a roaring success so thats a bullet dodged imho

2. we still have two weeks of the transfer window left so its not too late. Maybe the players we scouted last season arent avaialable now (new contracts, injury concerns, have moved elsewhere or dont want to come).

Squads are constantly evolving..there is no start and end to one so its not just a case of rebuilding - we are always going to have to do that.....next season Ferna and Kun may leave - a year or two afte that KDB, Gudogan possibly walker as well will all be the other side of 30 (Think walker already is).

You are arguing against your own point & agreeing with me.

It doesn't 'reset' it's an ongoing evolution as you rightly say. And those players might not be available 'now' indeed. That's why you move straight away, as in last year.

Would Leroy Sané be at Bayern now, if Bayern hadn't moved in for him last season, or would he now have a 5 year contract at City ?

We may indeed do some deals in a few weeks, after taking our chances in the comibg games & giving the new players no pre season. And it might save us some money.

If we don't sign anyone, then, as you say, we will also be in the market for a new striker next season. So 3 or 4 key players needed in one window. We won't get them all.

A week into the next season, if Sergio is struggling for form & fitness, will it be good management, if we are scrabbling around different clubs, making offers for strikers, or should we be on it now & just do the deal when the window opens ?

Same thing with Kompany's replacement. Except we've had 3 years, knowing it was coming.

Personally I think it speaks volumes yesterday when pep mentioned he would be happy going into the season with what he's got squad wise...I think he knows we ain't adding anymore

I really would love to be privy to our transfer policy.
Could it be a case that we have some big deals all set and ready to go?
Could it be that we have players like Doyle, Delap, Harwood-Bellis that we expect to make their breakthrough this year?

The one thing that I have faith in is that the board haven't come this far to just let the dippers dominate for the coming years, I suspect there are a couple of good days coming shortly to the transfer forum and we will all feel a lot happier come the end of the month.

He’s not going to come and say

Fuck me why is Stones, Otamendi and Zinchenko still here

And wtf is going on with signing a better CB than what we currently have

Is he

The reaction when things don’t go exactly to plan is doom and gloom. Ball not kicked but the team is full of crap players. Liverpool this Chelsea that, the city fans have gone loco ese.

Will we avoid the drop, do you think? Personally, I can see this being a dogfight between us, Bournemouth and West Brom.
