really? whys that?

I thought there was precedence for this and there was something that enabled this (Webster ruling???)
Both times it’s been used it went to CAS because it’s not just about the remaining wages but also includes other factors such as age, length of contract remaining and damage to the club that loses the player and both times CAS has increased the amount slightly from the cost of wages only.

cheers for explaining.

But its not like it would be a lenghty thing nor a disagreement between Messi and Barca (like he is tryign to avoid by challenging them on the opposing interpriations of his contract and clauses in it)

In this case Messi would jut be using a completely legal way of getting what he wants - he wouldnt be dragging Barca through he courts - he would be just using the courts to ratify what he has done - thats how I see it anyway

Messi was convinced we could do it for free and played his cards as strongly as he could, but my contacts have stated this morning that even the video yesterday was part of a plan B strategy.

I expect another power play before this window closes and if Barto is still there, a final negotiation in January involving Garcia.

Messi was actually very smart yesterday, he ticked a lot of boxes - love for Barca, love for his family, wanting to love the remainder of his playing days - even box checking the terrible toll COVID has had on the world.

His entire narrative was an appeal for empathy, wanting to draw people to his struggle.
Smart? His struggle was more moving than Elisabeth Fritzl‘s account of family life.

If City were to bid I still don't think it'd be accepted.

1/ he's carrying that team, they need him badly.
2/ They know there's a chance he'll stay under a new president
3/ They'll have no time to reinvest the budget in new players

It would be seen as too self serving. Without him there's even a chance they could drop out of the CL positions in Liga.

The worst thing is people watching that video and then stating he had fucked City about.

How the fuck do they function if that’s the take away from the interview?
We've not even spoke one word about being interested in him, our silence on the whole matter shows we've kept our cool behind closed doors.

I love how the press have linked us to him without us lifting a finger.

I think we have quietly leaked or briefed one or two items. The rest, agree, pure speculation. I think the claim thst no first tem players would be used in a deal came from us. I also think the assumption that if needed we would pay to get him out of his contract also had some element of a leak from us.

the most telling ones came from psg and inter, claiming they were out because messi's entourage said he was decided on coming to us.

Nope, just the press both here and in Spain putting pep, Messi, txixi and the Barca connections together and coming out with him coming to us.

Messi made it very clear just how unhappy he was at FCB. He implied he'd leave on a free.

That makes Barca vulnerable to a transfer bid.

Put yourself in Barca's shoes. What would you do if someone offered you £100m for a player that will likely leave for nothing in June, and will cost £100m in wages and bonuses this season. Is Messi worth losing c.£200m to Barca for 6 months when his heart is not in it?

It's worth City making a bid now but of course Barcelona could ignore it. Let them digest the financial and sporting implications for a couple of days. I think there's a chance they might sell him. I would if were them.

For the first time in this saga I can now see some win-win outcomes. Before it was all screw over Messi by making him look money-grabbing or screw over Barca by him leaving on a free. Both sides want to resolve this, and neither side wants to be the villain.

But now, thanks to Messi's statement, there is the door open to him leaving for a fee. If agreeable, Messi gets the move he wants and has proven how much he cares for Barca by not taking them to court. Barca get to show they have fought for him, but secured a sizeable fee, freed up the wage bill, but also complied with the wishes of their greatest ever player, and both sides secure their respective legacies.

A decent offer from City would now offer an attractive resolution to both sides.
Said numerous times on here over last couple of days, we will not bid before we receive some encouragement, it’s just not our style any more.

Initially yes, and throughout no doubt. but some claims must have had some element of check with the club, i honestly think that. And some of the Argentine press likewise from the messi camp, with media getting creative with the rest.
i.e, we never denied interest, or discussions with messi. or even that no feevwould be considered. We did deny including jesus and bernardo in any offer.

We did the same with Sane, a year left so cash in, granted he's 10 years younger than Messi but you get the gist.
All players with a year left on their contract inevitably get sold, very rare they run it down and go for free, of course there are a few that do.
