where has this, we will pay 100m come from, he is a free agent, we will not soften the blow of barca losing Messi, we aren't a charity, fuck em, screw them down, and if they want any of our players let them pay full whack , they are fucked ,we shouldn't give them a helping hand , theses fuckers were behind all the shit with the rest of the slimy fuckers.
& if he isn’t on a free, we should offer however much it would cost with the Webster ruling (plus a tenner if we feel generous)

Again a couple of years ago 101 % true, not as sure now but I am happy to be proven wrong.

Pelé still does adverts.. Plenty of ex pro’s many nowhere near Messi’s stature still attract huge money. Messi is still playing and would be in one of the best leagues in the world at one of the best teams in the world under one of the best managers. Of course he’ll attract t sponsorship. To think otherwise is just ignorant or daft, the sponsors will be lining up. China alone will have multiple companies wanting him to be the face of their products.

Nobody knows the contract situation for definite. The fee has come from the fact its believed that Messi isn't going to force any legal way out and would rather City and Barcelona just agree on a fee. 100m with players or without is going to be an accounting exercise from both teams, don't read too much into it.

I’m what way can they sanction us? They’ve tried it with at least three teams now and failed each time. They’ve already said it’s relaxed due to Covid. If we can’t splash the cash this year then we never will

If we breach FFP, then of course they could sanction us, why do you believe they couldn’t?
They’ve sanctioned plenty more clubs than 3 & the sanctions have remained in place for the vast majority of them. We got sanctioned & accepted it as a ‘pinch’ so not sure how they’ve failed every time?
Never said we can’t splash the cash, but FFP is still alive & kicking mate

If Messi is determined to leave Barcelona - and so far there is nothing to suggest he isn't - everything would seem to push the club into negotiating a deal. Whatever the precise terms of his contract, the release clause or the "leave for free" clause, it expires next summer and he can certainly leave for nothing then. It will do the club no good at all for the world to see that year as the time of the bitterest presidential election ever played out against the backdrop of fan demonstrations and the ugliest of atmospheres within a Nou Camp awash with pro-Messi and anti-board banners and flags. And a new board, or even the re-elected old crew, powerless to stop Messi going. Such a scenario would hardly help recruitment but would certainly strengthen Leo's resolve.

And in the background is Manchester City; the best run club in the world (contrast with Barcelona!), the club David Silva gave his career to - where Sergio stayed for ten glorious years - and which has given "the elite" a lesson in "only spending our own money". This summer we have all found out exactly how far we can trust our club when it comes to financial integrity. To say our club is safe in their hands - after the on field success and financial brilliance of the last decades - is one of the greatest understatements of all time. I am confident City will negotiate a deal and bring the little maestro to the Etihad.

So, Tolmie, what's going on today?

So it's ok to shit all over your greatest heroes if the financial situation is worth it ?

They agreed a contract with Messi, that he could leave at the end of a season, for free.

Whether it stands up in court or not, you know & I know, that the intention of that contract would mean that it kicked in, now, the season is over.

But not only are they ignoring that, they are asking for 700 million quid, to honour it.

It's fucking disgraceful.
I’d look on it more as a negotiating position rather than one they can realistically hold (even if upheld legally).

If Real Madrid or Bayern tapped Kun up, would we still cheerfully wave him goodbye with his lucky bag and carriage clock?

This is mostly about how the narrative is framed now, and gettingas much money out of it.

In terms of narrative at our end, in many ways I'm quite glad (if we pull it off) he is coming now, under these circumstances, and not 2017 or whenever we were reportedly 'close' .

Back then it would have been all how everything the club have built was just to bring messi in, money, hiring texi, pep etc, money and all that. And we would have been portrayed as the epitome of evil, dragging away a great player from the 'pure' Barcelona that raised him, and ruining the romance of football.

But with pep consistently saying messi is barca, he should retire there, it distances us from trying to pull him over. This way, barca are in shambles, he is leaving out of his choice, for footballing reasons, because we are a better run and set up club, and not for money etc. If anytging, we are helping out rescuing a great player, without arguably needing him as such. And we've won the domestic sweep and broken records without him already, whereas if he had been here at the time, those achievements would have been belittled (even more than they are).

We will stil get all the positives of him coming, both commercial and footballing, but in a completely different context and narrative

So the retained Barca legal firm advised Messi? They didn’t think there was a conflict of interest? WTF
So, the same law firm that Barcelona used advised Messi he could break from the contract due to extended season. The ambiguity will surely work in Messi's favour, regardless of the hard stance from Barca at the moment.
