I genuinely can’t see how some can’t understand the process of the deal? How €100-150m isn’t great value over the terms of the contract? Forget the total number, it’s irrelevant unless he stayed the full term but by then it’d be irrelevant.
Divide the total fee over the total contract term and that’s the number we have to register through ffp each year, not the total, the sum per season. So somewhere between €33.3m-50m a season needs to be put through the books for financial fair play, or roughly £29.7m-44.6m of the Queens English. Name one other player with his draw or quality who you could sign for £45m?
Then there’s wages... Not a chance Barça pay him €1m a week out of their pocket. He’ll get paid a basic with the rest made up of sponsor payments, image rights etc but you can believe Barça make more than they pay out on the top up portion.
If... ‘IF’... He signed for us, for let’s say the £89.3m (€100m), and we paI’d him £300k pw before top ups, that’s £45.3m per year it’d cost us to finance Messi coming to gods own!!! Think about that... £45.3m! That’s pretty much nothing in terms of what we’d get back.
You need to then look at the numbers above and realise that’s US the club paying it, but we wouldn’t. Sponsors (currently 42 I believe) all would pay more, let’s be really conservative and say £1m extra a year each that’s £42m extra income meaning Messi would cost us £3.3m a year. But Etihad, Puma, Nissan, Etislat would all pay more than £1m extra each so again we make more and his services are more than covered. Then if it’s true he has an offer to go to NYCFC then they must be financing part of the deal.
So get this “Too expensive” or “crazy money” attitude out of your head and look at the bigger picture. This deal makes more than perfect sense when you look at it from the point of how it effects ffp. If city do indeed have a ‘Messi tax’ in all our sponsor contracts then boom we’ll be raking it in very quickly.
As for the ‘Walk away clause’ he currently has, are city daft enough to let that be inserted here? No I don’t think so, but I do see some sort of clause that lets him leave for a set fee that’s actually realistic.
This is a very exciting deal if it can be pulled off and Barça know it. This is why I think they are now shitting bricks as it’ll hit them a lot more than just recouping his wage back. Messi is a cash cow with plenty of milk left in him (Oo Er!).
Theres a great video a good 10+ pages back explaining it all in much more detail, go watch it if you’re a stress head or doubt the numbers.
