Where does anyone get the notion that all of our recruitment resource was locked exclusively into a possible Messi deal?
Do people think that at the first mention of Messi our people jacked in their day jobs and sat reading twitter and this forum for 2 weeks like a bunch of school kids?
All the ITK’s were saying that the possible recruitment of Messi was in addition to our plans for the window, so they will not have been put on the back burner awaiting an outcome.
People have every right to moan if they want but it would be better to stick to moaning about things that actually happened because inventing fantasy scenarios to moan about is ridiculous.
Spot on

The sun are reporting we offered £181m +£18m in add ons for Messi on 26th August - according to a "leaked document". Obviously Barca have rejected this. I don't to put a link in to the twats!

Erm sorry to break this to you but we have the most incompetent recruitment and scouting staff.
Bluemoon told me so.

True, but in terms of the squad, I’d say that we are weaker as things stand. We don’t know how Torres will perform for us. But we do know that we lost a very talented player in Sane. I think David Silva will be a huge loss. We certainly need Bernardo to regain his best form this season. God help us if Kevin gets a big injury!

Even if we manage to sign a competent center-back, we’ll be exposed over and over due to the lack of protection in the CDM area and the calamity at left-back. As things stand, we’re probably going to need Liverpool to completely collapse in order to compete for the title.
To be fair David Silva was way past his best, but still contributed so much, that's why I think we are short in midfield, agreed Bernardo has to return to form, otherwise we may have issues.

Striker is another worry, it was a bad injury to Kun and with his age, not a given that he will return 100% the player he was. Important that we look for a long term replacement before next season.

So if the club's don't want to sell and want too much money do we not have alternatives? Do the people running our clib not think about this in the planning of transfers?
It feels rushed and unprepared to me

No they probably don't think about it at all (eye rolling emoji)

At the start of the window TB said, in a rare interview, that it would be difficult to get people in because of a number of factors one being the economic climate caused by Covid. He particularly pointed out that we needed to sell before we could buy as we are near our quota of NHG players. City have more NHG players than almost any club in Europe.

We made two quick signings and we will see how they work out. Remember that all over our training complex it says that we don’t want a team of superstars. The cleverest signings are made by strong consideration to analytics backed up by personality profiles and old school scouting. If you have a lot of money well that certainly helps but it’s not everything.

Generally speaking the best analytics department is at Liverpool when they’re not allegedly hacking us that is! A lot of credit should go to these guys rather than just Klopp. At the lower level Brentford and AZ in the Netherlands are the best.

If we just want big name signings we will end up like United season before last. I think they’ve unfortunately learned from their errors now.

Khaldoon says we normally target players in the ages 20-25 rather than the finished article but will make the odd exception.

So it’s a complicated process not least because nobody has any idea what the market rate for a player should be.

With KK he’s obviously been identified as the best fit but then you have to deal with Napoli. There is a dearth of good centre halves world wide. Upamecano would have been my choice for the last year or so but perhaps City feel that we need more of a leader.

Not going for Timo Werner I’ll never understand. Watch him for Chelsea next season.

Anyway I digress. The main reason is getting players out. It’s a domino affect. We will have our targets lined up but we have to hope other clubs get moving and the chain doesn’t break.

Oh and then there’s Messi.....
Pretty sure I sa quotes from Werner last week saying we approached him and he preffered chelsea, something to do with getting playing guarrantees from chelsea if I remember.

Here it is

Man Utd spent the entire Summer trying to buy Sancho.

It’s the form of players returning over new faces that will be our biggest issue this season. Yep, if we get Koulibaly/ a dominant cb, it will drastically improve things but the loss of form of key players too frequently was a major major downfall last season.

If that’s true I feel better because at least we tried. I can’t imagine any top team giving a player starting guarantees though.

I do think that the prospects of signing Messi are heavily influencing our transfer business. Regardless of what people say, how could it not? Even if we do end up signing him for free, the wages alone will undoubtedly impact us financially.

Great post. There are too many who want us to just throw money at players and then get upset when nothing happens. The two early deals were in my opinion excellent. Torres in particular will surprise a few & Ake is proven to be dependable. I agree I think we are seeing the signs of some movement out now and would be shocked if we don't get two more high quality players in this month.

I'm with you re Werner but from all accounts Pep reached out and he said he wanted to be in London.

My only gripe is I would have looked to cash in on Mahrez as he would have good value and could perhaps be used in a swap deal - reason being is I think our best lineup next year will be with Sterling on the right and Torres on the left, with Bernardo, Jesus and Foden capable of rotating wide positions.

You never know there still maybe will be a signing out of nowhere - I'm sure they are working on a lot right now and I trust them to get it right.

I think it's more the quality of competition for a starting place, not easy competing with aguero, ask jesus
