That wasn’t the point though was it. If you think we can afford Messi on 500k a week on top of a huge signing bonus no doubt and another 100 mil for Kane in this climate you are seriously deluded and should stick to playing fifa

I 100% believe it’s possible to do both. Messi brings in a lot for 500k on a free, the club wouldn’t have any doubts. What I don’t believe is that Spurs would let Kane go for 100M.

I'm genuinely in two minds about whether I'd want Messi to come. One one hand, he's one of, if not the best footballer ever. He'd obviously bring an amazing skillset, and the clubs profile would take a quantum leap, so what's not to like ?
However, as a person of a certain age, on the other hand I remember, and worry about parallels with the Rodney Marsh signing. I'm not making any comparisons ability wise between the two, but we were top of the league playing imperious football when we bought Marsh and he was certainly the biggest thing around in the British game, but somehow our style of play dropped off alarmingly in attempting to accommodate what was, an undeniable talent. Dropping a great talent into a smooth functioning team screwed us up back then.
Then again I've always been a glass half empty kind of person....

Rodney Marsh and Messi - not really alike are they.... ones probably the GOAT and the other is a flash, self opinionated, sexist bigot. I’ll let you decide which is which.

Messi could come here, win 2 ballons d'or & 12 trophies with us, score 100 goals and the next time we were linked with an older player for a lot of money people would still bring up Rodney Marsh.

It's been 50 years and it still comes up in every transfer thread.

You are skirting around the signing bonus. It won’t be free like when Milner went to Liverpool he pocketed a huge signing bonus. Messi and his dad would want a ridiculous amount of money

Another year older in a new team with higher intensity and a new league that’s supposedly more physically demanding
Again. Cristiano Ronaldo at 36 played this 44 games this season so far. I just don’t agree that him coming to the PL would be much more demanding. He only plays a certain way and Pep would make sure he continued to do what he does best

This should go in the bin with the people who claim Haaland is “whoring himself around”. Messi, the greatest player in the world, does want to be payed what he’s worth. That is different from “he’s all about money”, like you’re painting. Even with the bonus, City knows it is worth it.

Whatever it is, I very much doubt any of us would know how it got paid?

I'd go as far as to say Messi could defer a large proportion of both his wages and signing on fee, if it were to also include moving to NYCFC in two years time?

Perfectly legal.

Yo Mr N M/Cr stop picking on the poor guy ;-) he wasn’t comparing Marsh & Messi directly, just using Marsh as an example to better describe his concern that our very successful system would need to make profound changes to accommodate Messi.
As I believe would be the case with our salary structure and also our command structure (because Messi will always feel that he’s bigger than the club he plays for - which is a fair assumption given his celebrity).

And I know exactly where he’s coming from, but I don’t share the concern personally because IMO Messi will stay at Barca (like he always has) and Aguero will join him there as they transition into the footballing equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters, populated with terrifically talented though ageing superstars.

Yeah all good points mate. I just hope you are correct in that he is very much separate to Kane or haaland. We need to replace sergio first and foremost messi would be the very nice cherry on top of the cake

He would be a free agent, his wages and signing fees would not be subject to any type of bullshit "true market value" assessment UEFA or our rivals would demand to see?

It is up to Messi to determine in that regard. We could pay him £200k a week and £10m signing on fee and that would be the end of it until his move to NYCFC.

There are even whispers Messi could be offered a small stake in CFG, which even 2% would be worth a shit load to cash in after an agreed time period.

Top executives are offered share options all the time - even the guy from the Hut Group is waiting to cash in £750m this year.

Maybe Inter Miami, find it strange we went into some ownership deal with Bolivar owned by Marcelo Claure.
He co owns Miami with Beckham and also has a slice in Girona.
Was around the time Messi looked nailed on to us that we got involved in Bolivar.
Think Messi also owns a gaff in Maiami......this Claure geezer seems to be getting quite involved in the CFG???

Of course. Let's remember Messi is already deferring wages and bonuses to help Barcelona out - as is most of their squad.

I've never been more confident City have all the bases covered. And don't forget Grealish!

Maybe mate, but doubt City would agree a deal that cuts New York out of the picture. When is their new stadium getting built?
