Potentially, yes. But not at the £100m they would get this summer.

No club would forsake £25m and the risk of injury next season, to keep a player against his will for another year.

They lose even more clout of they don't qualify for Champions League.
Plus, it'll be cheaper to reinvest part of the money on replacement players this summer when other clubs don't have a pot to piss in. FWIW I think they'll sell Sancho and Haaland to cover their losses, use what's leftover to replace Haaland and stick with Thorgan Hazard and Reyna on the left for another season.

Nobody needs to offer more money, that's my view.

Once the player decides his next destination, Dortmund are fucked.

He's not going to collude with Dortmund to extricate an inflated price for them.

Perfect storm.

United have too much business to do this summer and seemingly not enough money to also factor in Haaland, as they are letting it be known.

Chelsea, clearly, can match the fee and terms, but the whip hand is that the buying club will know in advance who Haaland only has eyes for, so don't need to bid against themselves.

Who do you think will be in for Sancho?

No, but they were free the following year, the principle is still the same, pay what we deem acceptable now or wait a year for less. In our case that less was nothing, in Dortmund's case it is 75m, reportedly.

We agree on everything, other than the strength of that position. Dortmund have a stronger card, for me, than you maybe believe, and they certainly have stubborness to make out they do. 'You can have the player now for say 50m more, or next year and still have to pay 75m. And a lot can change in a year, and you might not get him'. Then both clubs talk about the 50m.

Doesn't mean we won't get him if that is the intent, it just means it'll involve more dancing round.

Valid point on his agent, nothing to gain from a higher transfer fee. Unless he gets a percentage. He certainly however has plentyntongain from there not being onlynone party at the table, because them we are offering him and his client incentives too.

As you say, all predicated on what he lers the club know he wants to do.

A lot can change in a year but not once the player has decided on his destination.

Dortmund aren't a club who can afford to play bluff with £30m this summer, either, certainly not in this downturn and no attendances (potentially no Champions League) .

Coupled with that, sure, Haaland would get even more wedged in by the buying club, next season, but Dortmund would have a disgruntled player on their books for another 12 months, which will harm them on the field and in the pocket.

They still want too much and he has plenty left on his contract.

United have gone cold, but could see Liverpool or Chelsea trying to make a supposed statement.

Haaland's buyout clause and premium sale means Sancho isn't the priority for Dortmund.

In reality, absolutely. Once a player has made up his mind and all. But, it is very much Still a bargaining chip, however theoretical. Literally happens all the time. Arsenal did it with sanchez, we did it with Sane, and Garcia, if we had taken the bait Barcelona would have done it with messi, Leicester did it with Mahrez, Dortmund themselves have done it with aubameyang and with Sancho. Auba was almost guaranteed to go to madrid, he ended up at arsenal a year later, for not that much less. There is a price to avoiding a gamble of a year, and that is what Dortmund hold.

Again, agree Dortmund might not afford to turn down 30m extra. But they can ask for 50m extra and hope to get to 40m, and even 35m is a bonus.
They have alreadynset out their stall, saying theybwont stand in his way if a right offer comes, then claimed thenright offer is 150m, then claimed the right offer is 180m. Might bite anyone's hand for 120m, might reluctantly accept 100m. But the ridenwill happen.

Disgruntled player, yeah sure nobody wants that. The gamble is always though that the selling club will live with it easier than the buying club with waiting a year. We also Need to replace Aguero, so waiting a year is not that strong a threat.

Finally, as a general observation. We all talk about the pandemic as a big factor, in the market. But we all said the same last summer, and there were no consessions bargains or reductions in transfers, clubs still asked, got, and paid high figures. Might change a bit this year, one more year into it, but i doubt as much as we all think.

I personally don't care whatbwe pay for him. 120m, 100m, still a top transfer and a hell of a coup. I just don't expect it to go easy, thats all.

So Dortmund need to sell, Haaland prefers to come to us, we want Haaland to come.
What could possibly go wrong?

He is ours.

As you say, bottom line, this isn't an auction. Haaland isn't saying "I'll go anywhere, just show me the money" quite the contrary, his only decision is a football one.

So, if that decision is City, then City will bid. If it's Madrid, then Madrid will bid. But the idea of clubs bidding against each other in some type of auction is unrealistic.

When the press start reporting the inevitable ‘united hijack’ stories then we’ll know he’s ours

That isnt how football works though is it?

As soon as a player wants to leave, several clubs will put in bids for him.

At that point the club will decide which offer(s) they will accept if the valuation fee is met, and then speak to the player. I don't think the Haaland transfer is as black and white as people are making out.
