But we won what we won in spite of not playing a striker, not because of it.

The lack of presence up front is a huge reason why we struggled in certain games like the ones against Chelsea.

Teams like that aren't arsed about eleven players passing it around in front of them. They're well organised and need a constant presence in and around the box who will disrupt that shape.

Which is why we're in for one of Kane or Haaland?

We'll be lining up with our new striker for the vast majority of the games we play.

My argument is that when the new striker needs resting, we have the option to revert back to the false 9 system that's brought us so much success or utilise one of Ferran or Delap.

We would have plenty of options for what is going to purely be a backup role - we don't need to continue stock hording £50m reserve players if Gabby was to leave.

The false nine hasn't brought us so much success. It's usually been a last resort when our strikers are injured or out of form. In other seasons, our success has been built on the back of a striker who averages between 20-30 goals a season and supplemented by wingers who get into double figures.

It's a great option to have but not something we have to depend on just because our striker needs a rest or is injured.

I don't think it would be a hardship to have to revert to a system that brought us a PL, league cup, CL final and FA cup Semi for the odd game when we need to rotate...

You can be pedantic about it, but we would have plenty of options to act as a backup when we can't play our £100m+ striker.

Few clubs could dream of having a number 9 line up of Kane, Ferran and Delap - and that's completely dismissing the option of having one of Foden/KDB/Bernardo line up in a false 9 position.

Again, choosing to play a false nine against a specific opponent is different from not being able to play a striker because injury or fatigue.

I don't understand how you can think the latter wouldn't be problematic.

We're trying to improve ourselves, not maintain current standards and one of the most obvious areas is with both the strength and depth of our central attackers.

Great talent but woefully inconsistent....

He's never been used properly. Allegri wanted to build the side around him before he left, there's talk he'll do that now.

He's an incredible player but he's not a big number 9 and he's not a winger, and that's what a few Juventus managers have tried to make him.

He was incredible under Sarri though, and that's a good indicator he'd do well under Pep.

Then we can choose to play one of Ferran and Delap as a striker, like we have done this season when required? Ferran has often been preferred to Jesus upfront when we haven't used the false 9 system.

Again, my argument is that we have options - not that we would purely have to revert to a false 9 system.

If Jesus was to leave, it would be a massive waste to go out and sign another £20m back up like Ings so he can line up against Newport County when Kane needs a break. Delap is a huge, huge talent and we don't need to needlessly block his pathway.
