That isnt how football works though is it?

As soon as a player wants to leave, several clubs will put in bids for him.

At that point the club will decide which offer(s) they will accept if the valuation fee is met, and then speak to the player. I don't think the Haaland transfer is as black and white as people are making out.

It's exactly how football works.

How it doesn't work is how Twitter and the media tell you it works. Auctions, bidding wars, several clubs bidding etc rarely happens at the very top level.

What happens at this level is what is going to happen with Haaland. His agent will tell a club that they are his preferred destination and they will bid. Everyone else will go home.

Most clubs speak to players before negotiating as to not waste time bidding for a player who’ll never join

When the press start reporting the inevitable ‘united hijack’ stories then we’ll know he’s ours

I'd look out for the Madrid 'hijacking' stories in May/June. This is going to play out like Pogba to United. The Madrid press will make a massive song and dance about how he wants to play for Madrid and Madrid are his preferred destination, and eventually he'll join City.

His agent is likely to tell a few clubs, that Haaland is open to playing for, that they could be his preferred destination. He will invite and listen to those offers. Those clubs will bid both to Haaland and his agent in terms of wages and incentives (both financial and footballing) And to Dortmund for a transfer fee. Dortmund can accept all the offers, or none (if they are that brave which they wont be), and Haaland can accept one, or none.

It is never a one horse race, it never has been, it won't be this time. It helps, being clear what club he prefers, but his agent has already been claiming all offers are welcome.

Yes, of course clubs will make pitches to Haaland about money + footballing project. BUT, once those pitches are done he'll choose ONE club and they'll bid. I'll repeat again, he isn't going to move to any club but the club he wants to move to. He isn't going to tell four clubs that he'll play for the highest bidder.

It will therefore end up a one horse race. I'm really so surprised that this is even a discussion. Who else was bidding for Sterling? For De Bruyne? For Mendy? For Bernardo? For Mahrez?

And please don't give me 'links' give me something which is credible saying that other clubs actually made financial offers to Wolfsburg, Monaco, Leicester. It didn't happen because those things rarely happen when you're talking about transfers like this at the top end.

Pretty much. Buying clubs dont even need to make bids to the selling club, before speaking to the player. They just need permission to do so. And they can then offer and agree terms,,and then go backnto the selling club woth bids. And they can speak to the player without permission too, dick move but plenty big clubs do it.

There WILL be multiole clubs offering Haaland and his agent most likely Will entertain them. And those that feel they have a chance Will bit to dortmund, and if thatbis accepted gives them a chance to get in quicker than someone else

Credible? we were nailed on to get Jorginho, were the only place he wanted to go to, his agent and his dad said as much. He ended up at chelsea. Ditto Sanchez. Ditto Isco. Hazard. That isn't Cityitis btw, they are just familiar examples. Liverpool reportedly bid for Mendy. Aubameyang was nailed on for Madrid. Ibrahimovic, did it a few times (with this agent btw) where it seemed he was going to one club and the only one bidding, for another to 'swoop' and take him (media term, hence why quotation marks). David silva was nailed on for Lazio, ended up in San sebastian. If a player is set on one move, open to another, even after they verbally agree terms, he can still end up at another club. Paricularly where there are protracted negotiations and haggles with the selling club and players get itchy feet and go for option B. It happens, a lot, and there will be chances of it happening again.

I'm not saying that as my worry re Haaland btw. Just saying the absolutes are not absolute.

Something worth remembering, in modern football, the top players hold the power. Always.

Very true. Particularly with a good (i.e in his camp) agent. Which Haaland doeant have, so he and his dad need to be that bit more resolute.

With all due respect, you didn't answer my question. Which is telling.

EDIT:

I've just read your post about a buy out being bad for City. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on the way football transfers work.

I did answer your question. There are literally ample further examples.

The buy-out clause thing, open to interpretation, and I offered one. I don't see it as any more right than it being an advantags, just an opinion. But at least you refrained from being condescending, on that so appreciated.

As for taking it on yourself to tell me how football transfers work, please.

I respect you have contacts and information within the club and that is great, I never question that, never will, and I DO very much welcome every bit you share, even just an air of confidence.

And yes there will be plenty of times where a picture is painted in the media that is an exaggeration or even far feom the truth of the reality of a situation. But to say flat out there is only ever one club at a table and it is never otherwise, and that is just how foorball works, i'm sorry, thatbis just wrong.

We wouldn't speak to the player without permission, that would be tapping up. He might come up as a topic in a completely unrelated discussion with his agent though.
