It's exactly how football works.

How it doesn't work is how Twitter and the media tell you it works. Auctions, bidding wars, several clubs bidding etc rarely happens at the very top level.

What happens at this level is what is going to happen with Haaland. His agent will tell a club that they are his preferred destination and they will bid. Everyone else will go home.

Most clubs speak to players before negotiating as to not waste time bidding for a player who’ll never join

I'd look out for the Madrid 'hijacking' stories in May/June. This is going to play out like Pogba to United. The Madrid press will make a massive song and dance about how he wants to play for Madrid and Madrid are his preferred destination, and eventually he'll join City.

His agent is likely to tell a few clubs, that Haaland is open to playing for, that they could be his preferred destination. He will invite and listen to those offers. Those clubs will bid both to Haaland and his agent in terms of wages and incentives (both financial and footballing) And to Dortmund for a transfer fee. Dortmund can accept all the offers, or none (if they are that brave which they wont be), and Haaland can accept one, or none.

It is never a one horse race, it never has been, it won't be this time. It helps, being clear what club he prefers, but his agent has already been claiming all offers are welcome.

Yes, of course clubs will make pitches to Haaland about money + footballing project. BUT, once those pitches are done he'll choose ONE club and they'll bid. I'll repeat again, he isn't going to move to any club but the club he wants to move to. He isn't going to tell four clubs that he'll play for the highest bidder.

It will therefore end up a one horse race. I'm really so surprised that this is even a discussion. Who else was bidding for Sterling? For De Bruyne? For Mendy? For Bernardo? For Mahrez?

And please don't give me 'links' give me something which is credible saying that other clubs actually made financial offers to Wolfsburg, Monaco, Leicester. It didn't happen because those things rarely happen when you're talking about transfers like this at the top end.

Pretty much. Buying clubs dont even need to make bids to the selling club, before speaking to the player. They just need permission to do so. And they can then offer and agree terms,,and then go backnto the selling club woth bids. And they can speak to the player without permission too, dick move but plenty big clubs do it.

There WILL be multiole clubs offering Haaland and his agent most likely Will entertain them. And those that feel they have a chance Will bit to dortmund, and if thatbis accepted gives them a chance to get in quicker than someone else
