My interpretation of this is that they wont be breaking the PL transfer record this summer.. and in a pandemic and all. Khaldoon has been very clear in every interview he does that he does not want to break these individual records, (speculation: To be seen as that publicly, and for the teams cohesion in the dressing room as well) and Pep has often echoed these sentiments during the seasons as well.

That means that any transfer this summer would have to get under the Pogba 89m£/105m€ fee to Juve, and I just cant see Haaland getting anyway near that, especially when his clause next summer is well below that as well.. So I conclude from that that Lautaro Martinez and Joao Felix etc among others still is in the running, if any at all this summer.

Joao Felix would likely cost more due to his contract legnth at Atleti

Maybe we are simply prepared to wait until next summer. Perhaps discussions with alf have been to that effect.

Mind games. Basically telling Haarland if you want to come then reel your fucking agent in. We will pay what we can afford. If it's not enough then we will move on. I have total trust in the club and as much as I'd like to see us get him I won't worry if we don't. I think the best thing we can do to persuade him to come is by battering them in the upcoming fixtures.

We're a club that will steadfastly refuse to go a penny over our valuation for a player. We missed out on Van Dijk because of it. I don't know how much our valuation of Haaland is but I'll be very surprised if there's not a club out there who will pay the extra £10-15m that we won't be willing to. That's why I don't see us getting him, and why we very rarely go in for players who are wanted by other big clubs.

Yea seems like theres a wonderkid every year , Joao Felix , Jovic , Andre Silva , Haaland then teams panic and grab them and they dont turn out to be what they thought they bought.

I mean Haaland is nothing like the other three you mentioned- particularly Joao Felix, who was bought because of what he might become rather than what he already was (because Atletico are idiots). Haaland is already a top five striker in the world and he's twenty. Jovic and Silva both had decent goalscoring seasons but nobody took them seriously as future Ballon d'Or candidates.

Putting Haaland in the same category as Jovic is miles off the mark. It's like comparing Ronaldo to Pedro Neto.

In all fairness, Pep said it was "impossible" to sign a striker. Nobody needed him to say that, nobody expected him to say that. No other manager said that. But Pep's not an idiot so we have to assume that he had some ulterior motive and that openly declaring we can't afford the best young forward since Messi is probably part of a plan.

Yes, a plan not to buy him.

If the Spafia are good with paying £170m for Kane then this time we get our "top target"...

Okay fine! 2nd After Haaland, but Kane...

Even the somewhat oft injured 28 year old next season 'Arry...

Doesn't rely on pace, is more of a better in the air, stronger, poorer dribbling, aging Messi-like substitute signing who can create and score is a legit game changer in our side of a different kind.

Otherwise I'd expect Felix the next in likely to sign or try hard for.

Haaland 3rd in likely, 1st in effort.

Lukaku a distant 4th in both trying and desire.

Totally agree.

No issue with any of that. We should be applauding that mentality, not panicking we won't get this or that because of it. The calm and confidence in that, coupled with actual achievements, whats not to like.

If people truly believe from what pep says, that we wont sign a top striker, a position imho reallh needing filled, because of the money asked, then it goes without saying that we won't be signing graelish either as he is meant to be 80m+ at least. If, being the key word there btw.

Obviously, we Will fill required positions. and we will sign players and pay money it takes to get them. But the stance itself and declaring it in public, particularly at this stage, is spot on.

Just a note, Pep is pep, and has a very open snd recognizeable interview style.

But I do find myself thinking, more and more, how in sync he seems to be with Khaldoon, and how he seems to channel Khaldoon's own ambition and stance with this club. It is fucking incredible to watch.

I think Pep might use the academy more seems like we have a golden group of players coming through, with very high potential. Also on Foden false 9 weve seen it three times. Once against Madrid where he got man of the match, the second against Chelsea where he was brilliant and got a goal and lastly against Liverpool in the second half where he was amazing. Pep might be grooming him to be what Messi was for him at Barca. Messi at 20 and foden at 20 the stats are similar.
