Jacinda Ardern

yeah and its two Islands etc etc - thing is with a grown up approach to politics Labour won a majority for the first time for any party in decades. Then her/the party approach got buy in from the population who all worked hard on Covid. Then when new cases appeared that was repeated and so on. All this was on the back of dealing with the massive earthquake and the Mosque massacre.

Size of the population pales when you factor in the fucking tribal nationalistic approach to Covid and Brexit by the shit show here.
Tribalism in politics stems from a lack of knowledge and understanding, both in terms of the subject and the democratic process.

I suspect New Zealand political tribalism is the same as it is everywhere else.

@Hart of the Matter

Here’s the key bit -
The reality is that the latest data showed only small changes to child poverty levels, within the margin of error. The number of children living in households below the poverty line of 50 percent of the average household income (after housing costs are deducted) dropped just 2 percent from 253,800 in 2018 to 235,400 in mid-2019.

If more up-to-date figures were available, UNICEF’s report would undoubtedly be much worse. New Zealand’s entrenched social crisis has been greatly exacerbated by the government’s pro-business response to the pandemic.
If you replaced New Zealand with UK and Ardern with Johnson, it wouldn’t look out of place.

So 3 years in a coalition, 1 year of which is dominated by covid is enough for you to take some measure against data that shows deep seated issues from before her term?

I have family who work in the public sector in NZ. Deep seated issues with education standards, obesity and cultural issues are long standing. No easy fixes. Structural issues are at the heart of the child poverty issues. They are optimistic about the focus family poverty is now been given.
At least, thanks to JAs handling of covid, economically and health impacts, including mental health impact have been minimised. Will not show in their child poverty figures but has real implications.

She’s in her last year of her first term, so yes, I can take some measure against it.

Boris is getting loads of stick here and he’s been in the job 18 months- and quite rightly he should.

Child poverty shouldn’t be a political football.

It’s those that are stating how good she was and how “she and AOC should run the world”, based on what exactly?

Decent memes and Instagram posts?

I don’t have a problem with Ardern generally speaking, I’m just merely highlighting where she’s fallen short in her job.

You raised child poverty.

The indicators are not reliable because one years measures should not be taken as a trend. But who was the first to put the measures in place?
So you can't say she has fallen short. The measures to assert such a statement simply don't exist.

Your didsengenous responses smacks of making child poverty a political football, despite your protestations.

Latest Treasury projected figures shows 2 out 3 targets are on course for 2021.

My extensive family members in NZ now have KPIs in place driving their performance management focus on Child Poverty for the first time ever But hey, don't let real peoples experience shade your narrative.

In 3 years she’s managed to improve it by 2percent, if the targets are being achieved then the targets are too low.

No, I am not playing political football, as I’ve said, I have no issue with her. She’s not my leader and I choose to focus on the Tories’ failings as a Brit.

You keep mentioning your extensive family but it doesn’t mean anything, they’re a handful of citizens with an opinion, it’s about as useful as a handful of posters in Brexit thread and what they think.

I can say she’s fallen short because she has.

If you think that’s good enough then you need to increase your standards.

What a wonderful job she and the people of NZ have done. 25 deaths. Pitty we didn't have someone of the same calibre in charge. All those lives we could have saved. Their borders are still closed, all returning Kiwis have to pay to isolate. We do it now and it is a pity we couldn't have done it to start. Our daughter and her family live over there and life goes on as normal - normal I said not the 'new' normal. Remember that when we used to go out for a drink down the pub or go out for a meal and no facemasks??
