Jadon Sancho

well done Sancho, whether he was arrogant or City moved him or whatever, i dont know, but he's taking his chance with relish. Not easy for a young lad to move abroad but he's performing in a Champions League team, not some dutch also rans or Spanish division 2 outfit. Good for him.

I wish him all the best and hope he has a bright future whoever he plays for ..
one day he may well be good enough to come back and play in the best team in the world, his time was not now so he moved on .. Looks like he’s been vindicated ..

Give any manager in the world huge, huge funds, and they'll spend always. Pep has done this at City and filled his squad with absolutely shit loads of senior pros, quality in every position. This has lead to chances for the younger lads being less likely - it doesn't mean that he thinks playing the kids is a bad idea, it means that he's taking the easier hand, and who fucking blames him? I certainly don't, and I don't blame fans who prefer that either. He's fantastic and he's the best in the world at dealing with a squad that good. Just look how good we are. It definitely works.

However, I think he's also the best coach in the world at dealing with young talent, and I think it'd be a shame if he didn't leave something of a legacy on that front at City too. It's a personal preference, yeah, but I think that's fair enough. We have it really easy, given our funds, and £60m signings to me get a little boring. It's like playing a game on cheat mode. I love it, defo, cos we're class, but I tend to think it means even more when you win with a few of your own. That buzz you get when a local lad like Foden steps on the pitch. It's ten times more than when Mahrez does. Undeniably. Cos there's a connection. It's real. Personally, I love that.

There is no doubt that it'd be one huge less stick to beat us with too if Foden comes through and becomes a star. Add another 2/3 around that before Pep has gone, and that's a legacy. In the way that Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and the rest of the La Masia clan did for Barca. That bond is stronger with the club and the fans and I think it'd actually leave us in a better shape for a post Pep world as well.

Pep's simply not had to develop young talent at City given the quality squad we've allowed him to build. That doesn't mean he thinks young lads are an impossible risk though. They're not... once again, I don't blame him for taking that choice, but that choice doesn't mean that the other way is wrong too. I personally think both approaches can co-exist quite happily, and I think it'd be nice sometimes if we didn't take the easy £60m choice and made a lad like Sancho 5th choice, instead of 6th choice. It'd be quite exciting, IMO. And ya never know, it could save us a shit load of money, or as domalino said, a few sub appearances here and there for promising starlets could hugely increase their fee, or even make themselves a surprise part of the squad by having a blinder. Win win.

Excellent post and I couldn't agree more with the bolded bit in particular.

I'm happy for him. He took a chance and it seems to be paying off. He's a really great prospect and it would be great for England if he made it. I just hope he has the courtesy to have repeated stinkers whenever he plays against us!

Plus, secretly, I reckon someone like Soriano is happy too. Every success Sancho will have will be as 'former City academy player' Sancho. Which, despite probably meaning something else when uttered, would also make it seem like the City academy was responsible for Sancho being the talent that he is. Which would in turn go down as a huge win as far as 'the brand' is concerned.

So I suppose if you're looking at the academy through a purely commercial perspective it's a win.

just wait to he rocks up at united ?? the media will have a field day with open season all out cannon fodder on manchester city and the money over youth

sancho was wrong in moving away and wrong to demanding a place in the first team squad and wrong not to listen to pep, he is only a kid at 17 and needs time to grow and learn, yes the lad done well nobody can say otherwise but without the media all over this in his corner the lad would be finding hard playing in germany and getting media time in england, somebody got big links and money in the lad to get the media time with the bbc and sky and using all the tricks in the books to promote the lad in england

I think he’s proving he was anything but wrong. And let’s have it right, if he’d left United under the same circumstances and was doing as well as he’s doing now, we’d all be taking the piss. And that’s what most of the negativity towards him stems from on here, because you know we will get it.

I've said before but having a couple of 'kids' on the bench out of 7 subs wouldn't cause too much if any damage to our chances of winning a game (I know we normally have that now but only with Bravo being injured).

I'm of the opinion that every other game at very least should have an academy lad or two on the bench. If that means a senior pro sitting out v Huddersfield at home, so be it. The rest will be good for them anyway. Rotation etc. Our squad and team is so good that it shouldn't matter anyway. If it means thats when we're 3-0 up after 65 mins we can give a senior debut to someone who played brilliantly in the EDS midweek, and that kid comes on, full of confidence, runs at a defender, gets an assist or scores, then we could have unearthed a star. Or added a zero or two to a future price tag. You don't *need* 7 subs every week. You just don't.

So you want us to potentially damage our results just so you can say we have played an academy player?

What a bullshit post.

An academy player is not going to damage our results when the other 10 players are multimillion pound internationals.

People will say 'it will take something exceptional to make it to this side'. Well Pep gave 22 La Masia players debuts in 4 years at arguably the greatest club side ever.

The debutants in the ‘Pep Team’

2008/09: Busquets, Thiago, Xavi Torres, Muniesa, Botía and Abraham

2009/10: Fontàs, Dos Santos, Soriano, Gai Assulin and Bartra

2010/11: Oriol Romeu, Sergi Gómez, Miño, Nolito, Montoya and Sergi Roberto

2011/12: Cuenca, Deulofeu, Rafinha, Tello and Riverola

The players in bold made more than ten appearences. Pedro made just 2 appearences under Rijkaard so his development we attribute to Pep. Jeffren Suarez made one appearence two years before Pep arrived and then played 33 times for Pep. He scored in the 5-0 win over Real Madrid.

Jeffren has made four transfers since leaving and now plays for Grasshoppers in Switzerland. Cuenca plays in Israel. Muniesa I believe was at Stoke. Rafinha joined Pep at Bayern.

Most of the list are not familiar names - yet they got the chance to play for the first team. They got to play with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Puyol, Alves etc.

So I don't buy the argument that you have to be exceptional just to get a look in. In fact I would say playing with top players makes it easier.

How did a guy who made 30 appearences in a season for Barcelona now play his trade in Israel at just 27?

I would answer because you can be carried by the real stars. Cuenca, Tello and co were fall back players. Fresh legs as subs or to fill a gap. Opponents focus on Messi and the big players. The kids can play without pressure and fear. How their careers pan out post Barca is a real reflection on their talent but your deficiencies can be masked for a bit of time. And academy players get the culture and run through brick walls. There is extra motivation to do well.

maybe so ??

but the lad is doing it the hard way round and when the best team in england manchester city and manager in the world says your not ready you think you would listen and knuckle down and not spit the dummy out and demand a move, sancho is a talent and maybe one day will say (i told you so) but chances are slim and when your already at the best club in england why push yourself out and move away when you see foden picking up medals and silverware and get time

what was the harm in staying on at man city and in the youth academy and playing EDS game and just being around this fantastic squad of players with the best training and coaches even picking up some game time in this pre-season would have been great for the lad but what do i know ????

Mate, it’s great passion in your words but it’s all coming from a city fan, not a player. He might have thought different about the club, academy or even pep. He’s thinking about his career, not like you as a long time city fan is thinking of it. He’s playing in front of 80 odd thousand fans in one of Europe’s top clubs, and is now a full international. It’s not going wrong for him. I think some on here are simply just offended he left, or dare left.
