James McCarthy

James McCarthy being highly rated but he rarely lives up to the praise and takes a game by the scruff of the neck. Technically he is good but I dont see him influencing a game any time soon. Yes he might need a move to get the best out of him. To think 20 million would get him is cheap but I dont think he is worth that money or is good enough. I would rather get in someone like Ward Prowse from Southampton would be a better player for around the same money give or take a bit cheaper than McCarthy.

Ward-Prowse isn't on the same level. He's a decent player who's exceptional with a dead ball; not what we need at this point. In the future maybe, but he's still got a lot of developing to do.

McCarthy is only 24, and was immense against Liverpool and United last season, two midfields that overran ours. We wouldn't need him to do too much; just hassle, win the ball, keeping play ticking over and provide the platform for the mercurial talents to do their work.

He's worked closely with Barry and that's exactly the kind of player he can become for a top club like us; he reads the game well, passes well, occupies the right space at the right time and can be a bit nasty. If he was English he'd be in the NT team ahead of Delph and Henderson; he's a better natural footballer and equally mobile.

£20m would be a fair price considering he's already got a CV of consistently good performances at this level, along with considerable scope for improvement.

I just think if your looking at a player to be on a scale to improve more I would go with Ward Prowse than McCarthy. Yes James does the easy things well and would be the modern Barry with a bit better range of passing. Seeing him playing for the Irish national side he fails when he is needed to dominate a game. I look at what we have and I still cant see him getting in ahead of a Fernadhino or even Fernado who I think will be a lot better this season after a poor season last year a full pre season behind him he is going to be better next year.

I had to do a double take on the author.....but that's a very decent assessment,a good post.

Mu concern with McCarthy would be his ability outweighing his playing time,like Delph,i'm not sure he would settle for a bit part role and I don't think he deserves one.
 
McCarthy is a decent player, but I don't think he would improve the squad that much. Aranguiz is seemingly available for roughly the same price, so I'd much rather have the latter + a HG keeper if necessary.
