James McClean

You're fair game now sunshine, hope you know that.

When you understand just how deep sectarianism runs throughout Ireland/N.Ireland (and Scotland with Celtic & Rangers fans), then this is not just a 'joke'. It rakes up hatred and violence that goes back hundreds of years, and irresponsible doesn't even begin to describe his actions. His club should sack him on the spot for this, and he should at least be investigated by the police to ascertain if he has broken the law.
Since I'm from Northern Ireland originally, I understand it perfectly well thanks.

The Troubles happened. Sacking people for making very innocuous jokes about it isn't going to change that. It's literally part of our history, but you get outraged by it if you want.

I spent a couple of years living there myself (before the Good Friday agreement).

I'm certainly not outraged, but I just know how stupid his comments are.

I've always supported his right to not wear a poppy. I always said his stunt to turn away when the British national anthem was being played at a low key pre season friendly was just attention seeking. I can see the joke but realise how many who were victims of both Republican and loyalist death squads might be offended. It was a stupid stunt but does it deserve sacking? No . Did Rangers sack gascoigne for his infamous flute celebration and the orange order are as secterian as they come
But McClean has made a rod for his own back again
