James McClean

He clearly has strong Republican views... which he’s entitled to, given where he comes from but he really doesn’t articulate them very carefully and seems to forget he lives and works in England where his views are not particularly palatable. If he wants to play Eamonn de Valera he might be better staying at home.

The moral highground has now been lost, and this is from someone that understands and doesn't mind his choice not to wear poppies.
Same here. I have no problem with his stance re the poppy. Lots of British people have a similar view and refuse to wear the poppy on conscientious grounds. Though the fact he earns his (presumably decent) living in the UK can leave him open to charges of hypocrisy. But the balaclava is a poor error of judgement, if he sees it as a joke. I can reel off any number of towns in the UK who have suffered at the hands of Republican (and loyalist) paramilitaries. I doubt they see the funny side of this. His agent must despair of him at times. He'd strike me as not the sharpest knife in the cutlery drawer.
