Agreed TMQ, but that's NOT the point. It's also a reason why many top Black acts from the States refused to go, in the beginning, because of the w*nkness of it!! It's gotten a little better. I digress...

The REAL point is about RECOGNITION, at last.

Nothing else.

The recognition is there, in the MOBOS, but at the same time it still gives awards to Rhianna and Joss Stone as opposed to Public Enemy and the like. Sometimes the likes of Dizzee Rascal will break through who has a modicum of credibility and saleability but otherwise it just looks like a token appeasement for the decades of whites appropriating black music.

Real music lovers would shun award shows and the like and accept that decent artists of any race simply wont win many awards in their time.

Chuck D is one of my all time heroes and I agree with him that modern black music is nothing but racist stereotyping and inverted black and white minstrel show. So long as the guy has a black face and talks about guns, basketball, hoes and money he'll be ok, just don't dare try to be intelligent or sensitive because 'homey don't play that'. Sadly.

This is so on the money that it really should be the last word required on this thread.
I doubt it will be,but it should.

I agree with you both agreeing with each other!!

Up until the MOBO insert a 'Hall of Fame' that recognises artists like Public Enemy, then I'll pay no mind to them!

As for Gstar, claiming Bloc Party have received awards is totally irrelevant, given the time scale of their existence in comparison to the MOBO Awards! Not only that, I see you fail to see the word 'generally' in the post you pick up on.

Award shows usually award sales, whites usually sell more, albeit appropriating a black culture whilst doing so...hence Eminem wins grammies whilst talented black rappers are told to 'be more ghetto'...enter 50cent and his numerous 'war wounds'. It's telling that Eminem is celebrated as a talented lyricist who uses irony and wit as opposed to other rappers who are seen as irony free hate mongers.

Of course, you're making sense today (no money for drugs, eh lad?!!), but you're argument goes down the pan, when in the late 80's and 90's, Black music was the biggest type of music sale in the world and still, only people like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer (whom I know you know, rode the coat tails of every hard working street act at the time) got the plaudits.

So, there's a hole in your point.

Whilst I see your point it does need remembering that groups such as Public Enemy (pro black), NWA (self styled most dangerous group in the world) and Ice Cube (self styled 'nigga you love to hate') were never going to win awards when you had a white guy with mad hair dancing to Queen samples and a black guy who was very religious (albeit a safe white religion) and danced in big trousers.

My point was that black artists only get awards if they dance for the white man or at least fit the criteria of a 'good little negro' ie gun toting, drug smoking, pimping, bad ass cliche. Ice Cube was too intelligent, he played gangster but he also said a lot of stuff that was never going to go down with jewish people or white people aka the record industry.

I am down to one last spliff though, on that you are dead right!

Slight aside, so sorry for pulling this off topic a bit. I'm not a hip-hop aficionado by any means, but I've recently been getting into some of Roos Manuva's stuff, and he seems like an intelligent, switched-on kind of guy who's been through plenty of strife. Is there any particular reason why he doesn't seem to get a lot of press?

1. He's British - we prefer American rappers for some reason
2. He's positive - Says more than guns n bitches so he's not cool
3. He has a modicum of intelligence - Intelligent black men are not needed or welcome
4. He doesn't dance - Usually a black artists fail safe to please the white man
5. He really needs to make piss weak music and have Rhianna sing a chorus or 2 - Platinum.

Cheers TMQ, that clears it up a bit!

I heard an interview with him on Radio 5 (of all places) on Sunday, and he came across as a top guy making intelligent music. I also love the fact his name is 'Rodney'.

I quite like Roots Manuva and he does seem a sound guy but the music he makes will never sell enough as kids arent programmed to like decent music and a UK rapper will always struggle against their US counterparts.
