January Transfer Window Its very quiet..or is it?

I try to be civil on here but I've lost patience with anyone who is still saying "we shouldn't sign Messi on a free because he's 33, sign young prospects instead." It is not either/or.

On the pitch - He's the best player in the world and available for free and, if he moves, only wants to come here.

Off the pitch - his arrival would increase the revenue of the club enormously with marketing and increased fanbase. We can then go and spend that extra money on "the next big thing".

Anyone who thinks these two things are a bad idea is an idiot.

I have not been watching Spanish football this season. As you have, could you tell me what position Messi had been playing?, or has he had a free role?. Where do you think he will play at City?,will it mean we will stop pressing, as it is difficult to press when everyone is not doing it. Will the high defensive line, need to drop deeper?
Do you think moving to Manchester, will be difficult , especially decisions over his family being reluctant to leave Barcelona?
How long do you think he has left at the top level ?, and will his astronomical wage demands have an effect on other players, despite the clear economic benefits to the club, as long as Messi performs. Or is it a matter of ffs, it's messi, so nothing else matters.

Regards, an Idiot.

All of these issues are *easily* resolvable as has been explained on here multiple times by several posters. Read the board.

I think that you’re quite the opposite of an idiot.
You’ve got well thought out legitimate concerns that only an idiot could be dismissive about.

Fwiw my view is that Pep or whoever replaces him will doubtlessly take such concerns into account and that if we do get the fella then it’ll be because they’re sure they can deal with them.
In short; I’d love to see Messi here, I have deep concerns about how we’d adapt to having a bloke that doesn’t run in our side but I kinda trust that those who’ll make the decision will be better placed than I am to suss out if it’s a good thing or not.
If I had to make the call it’d be a “no way” from me, but if we do sign him I’ll be well chuffed because I’ll consider that it’ll all be good on the basis that due diligence will have been done by the club.

Don’t you think it’s possible if Messi was to join he may work slightly harder and run then he currently does?
It’s plausible that playing under a string of managers and a board he’s got little or no respect for has had an impact on his work ethic.

It’s also plausible that being at a new club that’s outside his comfort zone playing for a manger he respects and wants to play for May mean he’s inclined to put the yards in.

I can see why Messi signing has its risks it’s big wages for an older player but signing a 24 year old for big Money is just as risky when you consider he may bomb out and our track record of recouping fees is shocking.

Personally I think get him in.
Play him just off the striker in the middle and let him be free.
Play KDB 5 yards further back and see how it goes. Play Foden on the right and let him and Messi interchange during the match.

Great post. All I'd add is that it's a false choice between Messi and another young player. Signing Messi funds other signings be it in the summer or a year from now.

As above all of these concerns have been addressed multiple times by many posters in the messi thread and the summer It's Quiet thread. Very boring to have to keep going over the same tired old ground of "but he's old and expensive and doesn't run". It's all daft.

If we had had a forward line in 2011, including , Messi and Aguero, i would have been in dreamland, if we start the 2021 season with those two as starters, i am less convinced.
Your economic argument that Messi, will make us rich, will hardly be backed up by Barcelona, they have not a pot to piss in. He may help increase revenue, in the short term but will not make us rich.
You did not answer my question to you re your watching of Spanish football this season. You did like a post that suggested Messi will suddenly start running if he joins City, which made an idiot smile)
