Jay Slater (missing kid in Tenerife)

Was a bit before my time. The mood was good down there when I first arrived mid 90s but had definitely taken a turn for the worse by the late 90s early 2000’s.
Had become a free for all with pub crawls, booze cruises and the usual 18-30 nonsense but after the program ‘Tenerife uncovered’ was aired and showed the island in a really poor light (I was in it..haha!) the authorities had a proper clampdown and banned the 18-30s and a few others like Twenties and over the past 20 years has cleaned its act up mostly.
Still going to get the odd issue but there’s not a tourist destination on the planet that can fully escape the more unsavoury aspects.
Tourist destinations go through cycles.

Discovery - building and investment - mass tourism - over-tourism with social and environmental negatives- intervention and gentrification

Although the final stages seems to not apply with many Uk 'resorts'.

Tenerife is a fabulous island with pretty much everything you’d want from a holiday. Like everywhere it will have its seedier parts where the younger generation head for a blow out but that’s just a tiny fraction of what it has to offer.
All the other islands have their own quirks and pros and cons but Tenerife has much more to offer.
It’s a million times safer than it was 25 years ago, that’s for sure.
I didn't find it dangerous 25 years ago, raucous on Veronica's strip but no trouble at all, was around 40 years old at the time and had a brilliant lads holiday (can't do them anymore, two days and I'm fucked).

You nailed Tenerife tgere tbf.
Take out the small area of Veronica’s and starco (basically an area the size of Piccadilly Gardens) and the rest of the south has seen a stunning transformation.
There were 2 golf courses on the island when I arrived and maybe 3 or 4 Five Star hotels.
Think there’s around a dozen golf courses these days and too many fabulous hotels to count once you hit Fanabe/Del Duque/ La Caleta.
The gentrification has been a huge positive.

You was there for a couple of weeks holiday. I’m pretty sure it would have been quite easy to avoid the behind the scene stuff that was boiling underneath.
Best days of my life tbf, just was in a position to realise it wasn’t all sunshine and glitter.

Why didn't he try to hitch a lift if he'd missed the bus? Rather than embark upon a 10 hour walk?
I’ve walked for longer on...

Metamfetamine (methamphetamine) is a psychostimulant and sympathomimetic drug, and a member of the amphetamine group of sympathomimetic amines. Methamphetamine can induce effects such as euphoria, increased alertness and energy, and enhanced self-esteem. It is a scheduled drug in most countries due to its high potential for addiction and abuse. The FDA withdrew its approval for the use of all parenteral drug products containing methamphetamine hydrochloride, a metamfetamine salt.

Yep, no awareness of any undercurrent but apart from a couple of forays into Veronica's we generally stayed in Christianos which was lively enough.

Mrs H's best mate who sadly died last year had an apartment in Castle Harbour in Christianos, they had a girls holiday there every year until her mate got ill about 2 years ago. They went to Fuengirola one year for a change and whilst they were putting their hand luggage in their apartment both their suitcases were stolen! Never had one incident in Tenerife in almost 20 years.
