erome Boateng agrees to five-year deal

Jerome Boateng has agreed the terms of a five-year contract to join Manchester City from German Bundesliga side Hamburg SV.

The German international defender will formally become a City player from July 1st. As this date could still coincide with his World Cup duty with Germany, Boateng conducted a whistlestop tour of Carrington and City of Manchester Stadium in order to finalise the details of his move ahead of the big kick-off in South Africa.

Boateng is a versatile defender who can play at either centre-half or full-back. The 21-year-old is highly rated in Germany, having played 75 times for Hamburg and three times for the German national side.

City boss Roberto Mancini is an admirer of the 6ft 3ins defender, and was delighted to secure his first signing of the summer.

Mancini said: “This is a very good signing for Manchester City and I am pleased to bring Jerome to the Club. He is a young player who is already of a very high quality, but I think he can continue to improve at City.

He can play a number of positions in defence, which is important. He has proved his ability in Germany and I think he can be a very important player for Manchester City in the Premier League

...Roberto Mancini

“It’s good for Jerome to have agreed terms ahead of the World Cup, so he can now concentrate on playing for Germany. And I will be very interested to see how he gets on in the tournament, before welcoming him back to meet his team-mates in pre-season."

Boateng, who is the younger brother of Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Price, becomes the third City signing from Hamburg in recent years, following the 2008 recruitment of Belgian utility man Vincent Kompany and 2009 signing of Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong.

Watch out for more tomorrow and on Monday exclusively on <a class="postlink" href="http://www.mcfc.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.mcfc.co.uk</a>

Not actually a City player yet!

Well not technically until July 1st, that much is true......

Just couldn't fail to see the irony from those posters who are all too quick to disregard pre-contract agreements, has he actually signed on dotted line, etc.

He could break his leg, he could get a better offer. Until the ink is dried etc...

What is the significance of Chris Bailey saying "watch out for more tomorrow and on Monday exclusively on <a class="postlink" href="http://www.mcfc.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.mcfc.co.uk</a>"??????? Does he simply mean watch out for an interview with Jerome Boateng etc, or something else............
says there will be an interview with him exclusively on Monday. People reading too much into it.

Agree.

Has the OS site actually revealed anything exclusively in terms of player signings, that haven't actually come out in the public domain, in one way or another, before?

Not sure.

Not sure.

I remember the site twitter last season saying something like "our new signing is at the stadium...". Of course, it was RSC and everyone knew after a year chase his signing was inevitable.
