Jimmy Carr

@urban genie, interesting discussion on crowds and context here btw, and somewhat relevant too.

I love Trevor btw, think he is probably more clever than he lets on, and really funny. But mostly because I think he genuinely gets his audiences, and makes them feel like he is tailoring his act and demeanour to suit the setting he is in. Remember seeing him live, and thinking, the guy has totally clicked the culture of this place in the day and a half he has been here. He was able to make it feel (whether true or not) like the show and interaction was specifically for us, and not just a going through the motions and script.

Maybe they're not too keen, you can't force folk not to laugh.

No exactly, and that response hasn't come out of nowhere. Suppose it's the same kind of confirmation bias that exists against any minority. Logic tells me that the vast majority of travellers must be perfectly nice, but the only two groups I've ever encountered absolutely were not, so those are the experiences that stick in my mind. I'd imagine the reason for that is purely that the 'normal' travellers are by definition not ones I'd have come across as they keep to themselves. The people cheering probably have had the same experience.

That said I do think watching a Jimmy Carr gig and being offended at anything he says is like having a picnic at the beach and being pissed when the seagulls turn up. Once the clip is taken out of the context where everyone seeing it is expecting to hear some (extremely) offensive material, and put on Twitter for people who were just trying to have their morning coffee to hear, it will obviously get a very different reaction.

With a show called “His Dark Material” he was never going to be telling knock knock jokes was he?

It’s the same with Chappelle, tune in if it doesn’t offend and stay away if it does.

It’s not difficult really.

Think some people need to get a grip and stop doing their best to be so offended by everything like it’s a badge of honour.
I’d love to see text’s/WhatsApp messages on their mobiles, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of “near to the knuckle” humour. People who suggest they are offended are probably the biggest hypocrite’s.

That interviewer just wasn't getting it unfortinately even when he fully explains it she went down the route of context isn't a factor.

Not that I have a place to comment as an expert being white, but the but about Africans and Black Americans reminds me when I worked away at 19 and we had a large group of staff from Kenya, who would be at pains to tell people they were not the same as the staff from the carribean, they would say "we are african, they are not"., I will be homest was the first time really I had heard black people actively saying don't class me as the same as them much lile I would say some yank is europen just because they are white.

Think those that don't like people being offended get equally offended by the situation themselves

Everyone seems to get offeneded on diferent levels .

Personally I care not if he offended in context or if people found offence.

The criticism at people criticising is just one as bad as the other.

doubt it, a compilation of him saying the N word over the years has been put together and he’s already had to come out and explain the context
It's alright those offended by carr can battle it out with those offended by gofundme as to who is most outraged over the weekend
