Joao Cancelo | Al Hilal Player

Similar kind of problem to that with Nasri. Skilled player, wrong attitude. With this difference, that Samir Nasri played quite an important part in the 2011-12 title, and was a key player, with Yaya, in the 2013-14 title. Cancelo never had that level of impact.
Just glad that this is settled. Now all we need to do is get Ipswich to buy Kalvin at the end of the season…

He's a world class fullback. We've sold kids thus summer who haven't played above the championship for the same amount. Villa signed maatsen for £45m, Newcastle signed Hall for £35m and Brighton signed kadioglu for £30m all fullbacks. The market tells you that's very cheap for a player of his quality.

Cancelos wages were much higher than all the other players you mentioned and everyone knew we wanted rid of him. The fee has to taken in context

Not sure about that. Cancelo was in the PFA Team of the Year in both 20/21 and 21/22.

And it is unlikely that the players you are using for comparison have exposed themselves as temperamentally unstable, and unprofessional due to their attitude and self-entitlement.

His character is seemingly flawed, for whatever reasons, with a history of regular transfers from some great clubs, added to which he threw away the opportunity to work with one of the greatest managers due to his attitude and behaviour towards of some of his colleagues.

A disruptive element within a stable and professional squad was never going to be tolerated, and that is why the transfer fee City have received for him is a very good piece of business. His improved and enhanced contract is also now off the books , so a win win outcome.

And Cancello has increased his earnings to unexpectedly high levels, so probably doesn't care about the issues he has caused.

Together with the return of Ilkay , this is a brilliant part of this transfer window as far as I am concerned.

I won't miss him at all.

Fundamentally I just don’t think he’s very good, which is why he’s always been moved on after a year or so at every club he’s been at.

Not robust enough to be a proper defender, not productive enough to be a wing back. He flits between the two positions but fails to convince in either of them.

He’ll score a screamer from 20 yards occasionally and put a good ball over once in a while, but when push comes to shove you know he’s going to let you down. His attitude problems could be as much a symptom of this, as well as a cause.

If we get 25m-plus for him it will be a result.

He’s obviously a talented player but he just doesn’t suit the modern game, a bit like how Mata and Ozil didn’t survive the end of 4231 and everyone moving to 433 where they were no longer just the 10 and had to actually do some midfield work.

He’s got incredible technical ability, vision, he obviously has a good work ethic to get to where he is, but he’s just the dictionary definition of a luxury player because he doesn’t fit any position. He wasn’t clinical enough to be a winger so he got moved back, doesn’t have the discipline and concentration to be a RB and doesn’t have the awareness to play in midfield.

30 years ago he’d have been a Beckham/ McManaman/Roberto Pires style winger in a 442 and probably been one of the best in the world, but football has moved on and he’s got no position in 90% of top teams.
