If we sell well under his normal market value I don’t see that as a good thing as it sends a message that all a City player has to do is cause trouble and another team gets him on the cheap.
You raise a very interesting point mate, and precedent is important in situations like this.
In reality though, his situation is pretty bizarre and therefore relatively unique - and because of that it’s less likely to set much of a precedent.
He went from signing a five year contract extension in Feb ‘22, to both sides being so desperate to part ways that he left on loan for fuck all the following January.
Its the length of his contract combined with the rapid deterioration of the relationship between him and City that’s the problem - and in most cases that simply wouldn’t be replicated.
Had he still been on his original contract, he’d have 2 years left now - and his wages would still be at their original level.
Both sides would be looking for a move if no new contract was in the offing - and nothing unusual to read into the situation. Happens every summer.
Whereas as it stands, he’s probably one of our highest earners, and is sitting on a 4 year contract when in reality he’s not likely to play all that much.
In that situation, clearly a parting of ways is best for the Club too - so we’re essentially saying we’ll ruthlessly get rid of you asap if it suits us as well as you. And we really don’t give a fuck where you go. Hence Pep’s comments.
He also missed out on the Treble as a result.
I’m pretty relaxed that doesn’t send a great precedent that all that many players would be rushing to replicate.
