Joao Cancelo

Guardiola deploys an extra midfielder when there’s going to be a heavy press to compensate, so there’s no need for our midfield to drop deeper. Like having Gundogan on the wing (vs Liverpool? I think) a few seasons ago. When we play against Klopp and Pochettino any predicted line ups and tactics go out the window anyway, so my theory is redundant for those games.
Bernardo played in a much deeper position at Anfield just last season, almost as a second #6. In my opinion that was to ensure we had enough numbers in the middle to allow Walker and Mendy to push wider and higher to give Ederson an out-ball if the short passes to Stones, Laporte, Fernandinho or Bernardo were suffocated by Liverpool’s press.

Cancelo just gives us a more technical player as Walker isn’t the best at playing in tight areas whether it’s due to a high press or because he’s asked to make up the numbers in central midfield. If Cancelo plays at Anfield this season I guarantee we win the game in open play, even if Mahrez is on penalty duties once again. Liverpool wouldn’t be able to cope with that tactical fluidity.

I don't rate Zinchenko's defensive ability. He has however excellent going forward and his eye for a pass in exceptional. It would be a misuse of Zinchenko's ability if we were looking to use him defensively

I agree with you on his defensive ability. Had been made clear on numerous occasions hasn’t it, not least on Sunday. Its a question of using him in the right setting at the right time in games (and possibly that doesn’t include 1 on 1 against Salah)

Yes fortunately he doesn't have to play Salah every week.
Our diving Egyptian friend is a bit of a handful for anyone one on one let alone the amount of times we needlessly gave the ball away in midfield leaving Zinchenko out of position upfield.

Re Cancelo. We have a little time left but its nearly done imo. Tomorrow I suspect? :)

And KDB also played more as a second #6 against Liverpool on Sunday

As soon as it's done it will be announced as the club want to be the ones to announce it first before any pictures get out. One would presume that he'll be getting interviewed this afternoon and the official announcement will be around 17:00 today. Not ITK on this transfer before anyone asks.

I wasn’t struggling to work that one out actually, I couldn’t make it to Wembley so had to watch on TV so I couldn’t really tell. Gundogan when he came on definitely seemed to slot in alongside Rodri but I didn’t know if that was just because we were running on empty.

So how does the Danilo move go down on paper if it's a separate deal?

Do we effectively cancel his contract and he joins Juve for free?

Joao Cancelo has passed his Manchester City medical and was shown round the City Football Academy this afternoon. It is likely – though not certain – that the Portugal international will be presented to fans at the stadium tomorrow afternoon.

City are planning to coordinate the announcement with Juventus doing the same with Danilo , who is in Turin finalising his move in the opposite direction.

The deals for Joao Cancelo and Danilo are separate, with Cancelo – according to Italian sources – costing Manchester City £27 million. With Danilo valued at the £26 million, it makes a package of £53 million - Juventus' asking price for Cancelo. [@ManCityMEN]

He’s moved about a bit this fella. Hopefully Pep can get some longevity out of him here.
