I cant wait for mendy to be fit for a stretch so people can shit up about him not defending. Its horseshit.

If you play him like a LB he can defend brilliantly as seen in his 2 games vs Salah.

If you tell him to play as practically an extra LW then yes, he will leave space behind.

The only genuine problems Mendy had defensively was nailing down the transition from CM to LB in a few games when Pep wanted him to come inside - which all our fullbacks had problems with at first.
Yep it’s one of the modern myths that he can’t defend.

Fuck sake, oh for a defensively sound full back.
A perfect full back in both attack and defence is quite a rarity though. So when making a choice we should always lean towards a full back that’s better on the ball/in attack than one that’s solid going the other way. We are an elite team that focuses on possession. So much better to have an expansive full back. Any defensive lapses are more than cancelled out by the extra potency in attack, and the ability to let Bernardo come inside off the flank, knowing that there’s still proper width.

sees an awful lot of money for a rotation player
Maybe he'll nail down a starting place. Walker regained his form in the end but he was poor defensively and offensively for most of last season.

And Fernandinho, and Walker, and Silva who all start every game they are fit for.
Whilst they will all definitely get plenty of starts, I can’t agree that they will start “every game they are fit for”. Particularly if Gundogan and Sané stay, and Rodri is signed. None of them even started every game they were fit for last season let alone next.

I think Pep likes the idea of Cancelo to allow Mahrez or Bernardo to go more central.

I don't think Pep trusts Walker to deliver any attacking threat on the wings, unlike Mendy who is a monster in this department.

Also, probably thinking too deeply here, maybe Pep wants Cancelo so he can play Sane RW an play inside and be dangerous cutting in. He doesn't like Sane RW because if he is wide then he can't really cross on his weaker right foot, but Cancelo can do that instead with Sane playing inside more to shoot.

Mendy-Sterling on the left, Cancelo-Sane on the right... That's probably the most lethal wing combination in world football.
