Joao Cancelo

This still doesn't make much sense to me unless the idea is he's better than Walker and will displace him in the team. I must admit I've never seen him play but most people seem to be talking about him as a back up when we probably have the best back up RB in europe.

Walker's pace and defensive ability make him an ideal RB for a Pep team facing a counterattack threat.

Cancelo's attacking ability make him and ideal RB for a Pep team facing a parked bus (tricky winger who can create width and pull an opposing fullback wide while the left footed inside forward (e.g. Mahrez/Sane) cuts inside).

Danilo is a fine all around RB that doesn't really offer anything unique and is thus expendable.

Could well be the case. Interested to see how it all pans out anyway.

When Inter were after Danilo it was reported that he was happy to take paycut, would be weird if not now.

Both sides will probably agree to €25m valuation of Danilo. Can see €30m + Danilo to make it €55m

Also €5m a season is insane wages. Italians report wages after tax, so that's like £200k/week over here.

He's not on half that now so why would he suddenly demand more when he's after first team football???

So he`s one of the best attacking FBs in the world, but only has 9 assists in 2 seasons (in all comps) for easily the best team in the league? Looks shite defensively as well, not too keen

Is Fernandinho really that much less agile than Nico or Vinny?

If it's all about positioning what makes you think Fernandinho isn't just as savvy?

One thing he will be better at is passing. And we all know how much Pep loves possession. Maybe with even more of it we'll concede less chances overall.
Dinho is old now,he won't get back so he will bring them down, that's dangerous for a defender,i love him dearly so i hope if he plays there he does a good job

I'm very much over the idea that there's such a thing as a full back that can also paly on the other side. They're always a disappointment! That said, we have more than enough cover at LB so I wouldn't let cancelo's ability to play there be a deal breaker anyway.

In all seriousness though, I agree with you on Walker. I just think for the amount we're spending we should be looking for someone who will be first choice. It's a lot to spend on someone to just help out or offer a different option (which is what people are saying he is). Maybe there is a bigger plan for him if we're pursuing him this much. I feel like we have a bigger need for a CB to be honest but maybe Pep trusts Fernandinho to step in or Garcia to step up.
Yeah I am more concerned with the centre half options too. But knowing Pep he’ll have thought about something completely different to anyone else about this anyway!

I do remember I have seen this Cancelo now. I went to the pub last season to find the City game away at Shakhtar and they had the Utd game vs Juve on in the pub instead. I’d bought a pint so watched the first half. I remember 2 things, Utd being shite and the right wing back I’d never heard of being brilliant!

So on that 45 minute performance I’m all for it (bearing in mind the opposition).

I keep hearing the line, on several threads, it would be dangerous to go into the season with X number of centre halves. With the amount of possession we have, and the holding midfielder breaking up most of the oppositions play, how much work do our centre halves actually do! Christ, we could probably win the league with Jones and smalling at centre half with the amount of quality we would have around them!

Laporte is a doubt for Sunday.

Stones appears unable to maintain form/consistency for more than 5 months (going off previous seasons)

Otamendi - appreciate his efforts, but possibly on the wane at 32.

Harwood-Bellis and Garcia both very young.

Fernandinho - superb at everything he does, but not a natural centre back and 34 years of age.

I'd like to see a centre back brought in, but there is dearth of talent currently in this area - in my opinion. I also very much doubt City want to make Maguire the most expensive defender to walk the planet, but would take him at a sensible price.

Agree with all of this! We need a CB

Everyone is obsessed with the idea of a first choice full-back. Quality competition is hugely important for any top side. Having two top right-backs, with different strengths, will help push both players on and bring the best out of them. Walker had a spell of complacency last season and with a top class option breathing down his neck it is less likely this will happen again. That being said, we are aiming to win the lot next season and both will play regularly given that we should be hoping to play 3 games a week. I like the prospect of having the option of one fullback who is very reliable defensively and another who can help us unlock stubborn defenses. Ideally we would have two who excel in both areas, but they are very hard to find.

Looking back at the 2011/12 season, it is hard to say that any of Richards, Zaba, Clichy or Kolarov were clear first choice in their position, all were on a similar level that year and played a big part in our title win. Hopefully a similar thing happens next season.

I imagine City would much rather see who's available for around £50m in January than throw £85m at Maguire. It makes us look weak, shows that we're desperate and we end up with a player who doesn't even get in our best starting XI. We can make do for half a season without another CB.
